As Archimedes once said, "Give me a lever long enough a fulcrum on which to place it and I shall move the world".

Levers can be used to exert a large force over a small distance at one end by exerting only a small force over a greater distance at the other. The crane tipped over because of all the weight concentrated at the end of the boom (helped by the subsiding soil) but the principle still applies.

He assists the crane drivers with communications regarding load security as well as being another pair of eyes covering the field of operations.
