    Update on my new garage

Afternoon, all! I've been a bit quiet on here lately. We bought a new house last year, and recently I've been getting a new garage put in. A few pics attached Suggestions and ideas welcome.

Essentially, it's going to be 4.5m wide, 11.5m long, with a pit in the centre of the front half and a workshop in the bottom half. Hot and cold running water, electrics, ventilation and network.

Believed to be the only PFL Legnum parked on my drive unless you know otherwise.

I like the way you have done the pit. Will be copying that in the barn.

Do you mean the location or the construction? Happy to give you more details if it helps

Can anyone think of anything else I might want to route into the garage before I pour the slab?

Are the hollow blocks being filled with concrete & are the back of the blocks being tanked as well?

Yeah, as you can see from the pics, there is a mesh of T12 rebar in the pit floor with 400mm upstands that the blocks are sat over. when the third course goes on, we'll drop 1400mm lengths of rebar into each hole and fill in - then the next three courses can be done (although they'll have to be slotted over the upstands. then they'll be filled in with L shapped pieces tied into the upright bars. These bars will then be tied into the A252 mesh in the main floor.

The tanking laps over the side of the hole that was dug for the pit and will overlap with the DPM that will be going in under the slab, so that it's sealed.

Nice. All sounds good. Thought that may be the case by the pics.

We went a bit oversized with the hole dug for the pit, mainly because one side fell in, so I've got to order about 3 tonnes of pea shingle to back fill the void behind the walls.

I might be tempted to run a length of pipe that could, if required, carry gas. You don't have to use it, but if you decide to use a gas space heater to warm the place up, it's perfect (and much cheaper than leccy).

You're running hot water out to it - are you adding it to the heating loop, too? How heavy is the mains feed you're running? - >32amp I hope!

That's a really good idea, Steve, regarding gas. I want to put stuff in whilst the trench is dug up, even if it's not immediately going to be used.

No, not putting it on the heating loop, just having running hot water. I don't really want the permanent fixture of radiators. I have some electric heaters, although as yuo say not cheap to run. They can at least be easily moved out of the way or removed though.

Mains feed is 16mm^2 SWA armoured cable. I did some calcs and I could possibly have got away with 10mm^2, but thought I'd be better off over speccing than under speccing

Construction Nick. Very nicely and intelligently done. Looks like you have covered eveything.

Is it a soakaway in the pit or a hole to put a sump pump in ? We are thinking of making a soakaway but have it about the same size as yours so that a pump can be stuck in there if necessary.

Have you catered for compressed air ?

    1. In the pit you have some form of enclosure. Is it for electrical lighting? If so I understand that it should be specially rated due to potential concentrations of petrol vapours.
    Cheers,

I would say its a soak away Mark. You need a drain in a pit just incase any water gets in.

That's a very good point Steve and has reminded me of something I was told a few days ago. When working in a pit you need to be able to get out in an emergency. Either leave the handbrake off so you can push the car away or have someone up above who can do this for you. We are planning to build a flight of steps into ours.
