    cutting out - running rich

    Hi Guys,

I've done the search and it's come up with loads of potential problems for what I have.
My car has always been very bad on fuel ~17 miles to the gallon.
It has a mushroom air filter which may be part to blame.

Anyway, today, a re-occurrence of a problem that went away a while back but is refusing to go away today.

The car idles fine, maybe with a little 'puff' every now and then but when I bring it up to about 2,000 revs it stops revving up and dies if i keep my foot on the go pedal, or goes back to idle as long as I immediately take it off.
It's running *very* rich and I'd say I'm pouring petrol down the drain as I can smell it.

From the search it looks like it could be, air leak, coils, MAF & possibly more.

The thing is, this problem was there before but simply went away. Now it's back.

I don't have a way to get any codes.
Does anyone know what the problem is from what I've described or could it indeed be any of the aforementioned?
    thanks!

try dissconecting the maf and see how it runs then, its a simple thing to do to eliminate one of the possible causes

Fistly get rid of the Shrooooom Put it back to standard.
Re the stalling.. Can you get it past 2000rpm if you raise the revs slowly ?
Check that the Elbow to the intake hasn't come off, or any of the othe turbo pipes from FMIC to inlet manifold.
17mpg is normallish for an Auto with a bit of ragging

    Thanks Guys.
Went out just there and disconnected the MAF and was able to go up through the revs no hassle.
Re-connected the MAF (idle sounded better immediately) and the thing cut out at 2k as before.

Re-did the whole thing again to make sure it wasn't a fluke and low and behold MAF off = works. MAF on = fooked.

    WTB: MAF :-)

P.S. It's a driven hard manual and I've been looking for standard air intake since I bought the thing all those years back. Postage to Ireland is what kills it.

would over fuel like a bugger ,but i do recall someone driving with it unplugged for a small amount of time because they had to.

i would say yes if you really have to but only if you really have to.

I'll check tonight, I'm sure I have a MAF. Only killer is the 20 odd quid postage!
