    Auto vs Manual MPG

Hi all, done the search and cant find straight answer for this question:

How MPG looks like in comparison between manual and auto VR4, asking especially ppl who converted their cars (usually from AT to MAN) or used both, is conversion make any noticeable difference in MPG ??

Owning an auto, I can say MPG is not very good but the difference is probably between 7 & 10 MPG.( This is the same for most cars).

My car has been converted from auto to manual, and I'm consistently seeing 25+ mpg if I'm driving sensibly. If I push harder then I can drop it down to 22mpg or so.

When it was auto, I was seeing an average of between 21-24mpg. There is a definite improvement of around 3-4mpg per tank of fuel.

I have a manual VR4 and I've also owned an auto. In my opinion the manual is MUCH more frugal with its fuel and consistently achieves better mpg.

I'm currently averaging 23.5MPG after 49 fuel ups. My last tank was 25.8MPG. The best I've managed over 150km is 28.7MPG but as it wasn't an entire tank, can't really be considered my "best".

I also drive a PFL auto

Ok, so is the right direction to archive better MPG to get manual gbox fitted (which I recently bought), this is my last attempt b4 LPG, I was considering 3 options :
    1.Buy motorbike :-0
    2.LPG conversion
    3.Manual conversion

And after hard thinking, manual kit pop out for sale section so I decided to go for it because no matter how hard I trying, can't go better than 20MPG, which is annoying.

Out of those options, the LPG conversion would give you the best return. It will cost roughly the same as a manual conversion but return better.

I've also seriously considered a motorbike, but decided against it in the end as it was just too dangerous. I'd rather have 2 metres of car to crumple any impact instead of the handlebars.

LPG on GOOD components cost around 800 £ plus fitting, cost per litre is around half price of petrol BUT you need to take in to account that car needs to burn around 25% of lpg more than petrol so the real world is about 25% savings.
Conversion to manual hopefully will cost me the same and if I achieve 25% better MPG say going from 20mpg to 25mpg its should satisfy my wallet and misuses, regardless other benefits from manual conv.

Thing I got this right way round ??

Got motorbike here in UK b4, and as you say is far to dangerous than VR4, I just want to live and wife wasn't pleased to get another toy

The best so far mpg I got after manual conversion was recent japfest trip. It went to 33 mpg on return trip to Bath/Castle Combe/Salisbury doing average 75mph cruise and some madness on a roads around Salisbury. Was very pleased with that. 10 mpg better that my auto. On daily basis I get 260 miles to the tank.

    Now: Lancer Evolution 8 FQ-300
Running 325 HP ATW and 510 Nm torque at 1.6 bar

33 MPG is very good result indeed (8.56 l/100km) especially on 340BHP car, as said earlier I will be VERY pleased with 25MPG (I am not a bit optimistic??) but i was hardly achieve that on my v6 n/a manual

My car used to give 10-15% better as a manual than an auto. However, I'm not known for being the slowest on the motorway or the slowest from the lights.....

If you do convert to LPG, is it widely available across the UK at service stations?

According to UK LPG map, yes is widely available on every main motorway and even in smaller towns, said more, when we travel to PL (1100miles) I don't need to use any petrol.

Echoing most of the comments above I could rarely hit 200 miles + from my Pfl auto, manual averaged 290+. The best achieved was 342 from a tank of careful driving. Manual definitely the way to go and a 6th gear for motorway!

With auto I cant get under 10l/100km in highway ( 60-65mph) and if I drive even little city driving it easily goes to 11 l/100km. As for manual the locals get 10 l/100km in mixed driving. I think manual consumes considerably less in city. Auto /manual difference is smaller on the highway. Yes the auto has smaller revs but the autobox kills that advance.

Agree - my little 150km sub 10L/100km sojourn was quickly eliminated when i hit some uphills.

I'm getting near 25 mpg from pfl Auto. Will update figure on the boost solenoid thread soon as i think removing the hose from the factory solenoid contributed to improved economy and smoothness.
