Splitting the front outer CV joint

G'day folks, another rainy november day with the legnum up on jacks and an ever growing list of bits to fix..

I'm currently replacing innner/outer track rod ends (as pointed out on our recent northwest meet, very knowledgable people who can spot a variety of faults with your car in minutes!!), whilst there i see the outer cv joints on both sides are fubarred, one rather badly, the other hasjust started to weep, like myself.. I do not really want to drop the gearbox oil as it's only done a 1000miles, so was going to leave the driveshafts in place and split the outer joints in situ, difficult i know but feasible on some cars? Can the mitsubishi driveshafts be split? Looking at camskills, no outer cv joints avaiable? I've got a bad feeling about this.. Other than that, is it time to buy one of those cv stretching cones?

i have not used a streching cone before but there are lots of cv boot kits on ebay with the streaching cone included for less then £20

I am only guessing here but i would suspect there is a circlip on the end of the drive shaft in side the cage of the outer CV joint. remove that and shaft should pull out of the cv cage.
    i will check ASA.

    Bye for Now!

i have just had a check and there is no mention of a circlip on the outside cv joint sorry.

but there is one on the inside,
so it would be a case of,
assuming the drive shaft is romed from hub assy on the outside.
remove inner cv boot clips, pull back larger end of boot.
pull 3 pointed bearing end from inner cup leaving cup in gear box.
remove 3 pointer bearing end from drive shaft.
    remove iner cv boot
slide outer cv boot off the inner end of the drive shaft.

do it in revers for fitting.

well that would be one way to do it.
one of the drive shafts has a rubber harmonic balencer (i think) in the middle of the drive shaft so you will have to pull the out cv boot over that to take it off the inside.

    Ah, greetings Mr Dave!!

Off topic---Have emailed evoscan to see if they have ABS feature, awaiting reply, also emailed member on here who had suggested in a post that bleeding with engine running helps bleed abs. Again, awaiting reply.

Back on topic---A beautiful northern day for stripping suspension out and the like.. I know that a typical set up is a 'plain' circlip around the driveshaft, and have seen some cars with a ' loop ended' circlip, (not sure of correct terms there) and one driveshaft i worked on seemed to be unsplittable! Ideally i'd like to split and remove the outer CV prior to fitting for two reasons, A-I havent got a conefitter and more importantly B-I'd like to wash out and inspect the joint prior to reassembly. Slapping another boot straight over is fine for a fiesta but not my baby!!

Ahhh, doom.. Ok then, splitting the inner joint it is. It's my drivers side that is only weeping, the passenger side has been that way for some time so second hand driveshaft for that side methinks. Working nights for next 4 nights so driveshaft reconditioning may be taking place!! How disappointing..

you can remove the outers by removing the inner spring clip , this is sat in a recess so you need to use some small screwdrivers to flick the end out and work it round

but you can not get any parts for the outer so unless your just cleaning it up there is little point in removing the outer joint
