Looking a buying an Audi A4 Estate

My question is, what engine is best? I'm looking at early 2000 cars. Do I go for the 1.8t or the v6? Does anyone have experience with this era of Audi? Keep in mind diesel is not an option.

Also looking at a few VW Passats. Same question, what engine? Anyone had experience as to to which car is better? I know they are essentially the same car....

get a Aristo! saves on repairs.. we get/had afew A4s and VWs both 4 and 6 cylinders through this year.. mainly water pumps and radiators. "not a major job" Nek minnit..... we just remove the whole front of the car to do the work

Doing the work isn't an issue - gives me something to do!

Wouldn't buy an aristo as we want a wagon

We have an 2003 A4 avant 2.4 V6. Very smooth with the multitronic auto box.
Uses a litre of oil every 1000miles.
The multitronic boxes supposedly are unreliable and expensive to fix and although smooth give no excitment so I would stear away from multitronic at this sort of age.
