    Cambelt

    Hi All

    The cambelt on the car needs changing and I was looking through the service manual to see how it is done it and I cant seem to find it. Am I just being blind?

    How easy/hard is it to do? I've got a feeling that you need to take the timing belt off but I don't want to touch the timing as I don't have the tools to get the timing right If I mess it up by accident.

    cambelt = timing belt.

    It's not a job to undertake if you are not a confident mechanic. If its done incorrectly it can ruin your engine.

    Here's the guide for the VR-4: http://www.clubvr4.com/forum/showthr...hlight=cambelt

    And here's some V6-specific cambelt change info: http://www.clubvr4.com/forum/showthr...hlight=cambelt

    As said though, if done wrong, then goodbye engine is likely.

    I read through the guide and it doesn't sound as bad as I though at all. I'm going to have to take it to a garage though because I dont have timing tool thingie, he made his and just had a look about but can't seem to find one. Nevermind to the garage I go.

    Is not that hard if you FOLLOW manual EXACTLY and if you got any doubts during the change I'm sure you know where to ask, on side note I got brand new made in Japan by SUN (OE) cambelt for v6 Galant, make me an offer if you want this, its just taking a space and I will happily get rid of, so very likely I will accept your offer.

    Timing tools?????? You really don't need them at all, there are ways round everything for those who don't like buying unessential tools! Its really not that bad of a job on a V6, doesnt take all that long, but as said by others, if you've never changed a timing belt before this probably isnt the one to start with

    I'm happy to learn. I know its not the same thing but I know how to strip a bike engine and redo the timing on that, but that was a bitch to do because it was sooooo fiddily. Mechanically I'm fine as long as I have the instructions, if I dont have the instructions then It will take me forever but I will get it done eventually. Plus my partner is really good as well he seems to just look at things and understand how they work.

    I just read through all the instructions in the manual and your right. Its not that bad at all. The only thing I need to get is a new torque wrench. I'm happy now, I love saving money

    I've not been near the cambelt on either the VR-4 or V6. I plan to start with the Swift though in the next few weeks! Should be a bit easier, having just one cam and loads of room!

    I'm just jumping in with both feet (and following the manual) and hoping it all goes ok. Best way to learn I think, you never forget the mistakes you made.

    I didnt go through manuals now but I will give you two tips, get big metal paper clips (like this ones), this will help you to keep belt on to camshafts, and while you compress timing belt tensioner make sure you not do that in one go, in manual say (IIRC) one mill a minute or something like. That is a very common mistake done by virgins, compresses tensioner in vice too quick and damage it.

    Not a big fan of using clips on a belt as they do say DO NOT CRIMP on them. Granted its not crimping in the traditional sense, but you do not need them, I have done far more of these now than I care to remember and there is no need to lock up or clamp the belt to a pulley. Just set the rear ex cam about 1 tooth advanced and when you put the belt over the tensioner (make sure the ecentric tensioner is in the same place as it came off and the hydraulic is only in with 1 bolt so it can pivot) it pulls it all in nicely

    yet another v6

    its not a bad job on a v6, the first one i did i changed water pump as well which was not nice, but did it in a day. The v6 belts easy enough you dont need timing tools, you might have to get someone to hold a spanner on the cam shaft pulleys to hold it in place while you put the belt on but thats the hardest bit, crank nut can be tough i tend to put a socket and breaker bar on against chassey and give the engine a quick turn over but only a quick flick of the key to loosen it

    Any of the mods tell me why I can't see the "How To" guides ?
    The landing page just says I don't have permission but doesn't tell me what I have to do to get permission

    Are the threads just too old?

    There are only two real bars on here:

    1. Many of the technical areas are only available to paid (blue) members - this might be what you are seeing;

    2. Not relevant in this instance, but you cannot post a FS thread unless one of the following applies - a) you registered more than 3 months ago, b) you have 10 or more non-spam posts, or c) you are a blue member.

    No other restrictions apply, except for anything in relation to site admin.

    Hope that helps!

    I think it is just a case of becoming a paid member. Your username will turn blue and that area of the forums opens up.
