    Galant 2.0 GLS

Hi, new galant 2.0 owner from the UK

Hey, first post an all, thought I would say Hi before I really get stuck into the forum.

I have just got my first Galant 2.0 GLS after owning a 1.6 VW Polo for about 3 months, that polo was a utter shed that cost me 350 pound, and, although it did get me about, was so, just, bad to drive I wanted rid.

So I have been looking out for a new car for a while and stumbled across a Galant 2.0 GLS with only 26 thousand miles on the clock, and in perfect condition inside, bodywork only has a couple of small issues like a small dent in the rear wing, and a tiny little dent on the middle of the boot at the top (which has a tiny bit of rust on, like a 50p sized bit of surface rust, but im sorting that tomorrow) and the engine and everything else was brilliant.

    apart from one thing.

when I drove it the gearbox was a bit stiff and didn't want to go into first unless I was stationary, even 5mph made it difficult to put it in 1st, but when stationary its near enough fine, and the syncro between 1st and 2nd is a bit worn as if you try and stuff it into second from first too quick, it graunches.
Do it slowly and its fine into second from first.

so that's looked into joining to get some info about the gearbox and perhaps see if anyone is selling, but (before I posted this) I had a look round and read some posts, and I quite like this forum so will become a proper member and contribute for quite some time to come.

cheers for reading that 'wall'o'text', hope to get to know all you soon enough

Galant gearboxes are renowned for being notchy, especially 1st and 2nd and especially when cold. It could be worth changing the oil making sure you use a GL-4 oil that is NOT GL-5 compatible. GL-5 is too slippy for the syncros which causes issues when changing gear that show up the cold/notchy issues even more. It could also be worth bleeding the clutch lines.

Enjoy your stay with the club!

Second Nick's comment about the GL-4 only gearbox oil

Gearbox capacity should be about 2.7L. I don't think there's much difference between N/A and turbo, or FWD and 4WD.
