Newbie from Canada, have a '96 Legnum VR4 on the way from Japan

    Hey everybody,

Just posting here to introduce myself.

I have recently started the import process for a 1996 Legnum VR4 from Japan, and ive noticed that there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of aftermarket support for performance. Now perhaps i just haven't looked for long enough, but i would appreciate any helpful hints or nudges in the right direction, as i don't want to stay stock for long .

The car i am importing has the 6A13 mated to the 5 speed manual trans.

    Thanks for reading.

Whereabouts in Canada? It's a big old place......

There aren't many off the shelf items specifically for the 6A13 I'm afraid. The main restriction is the turbos - they are too small to flow a lot at high revs, so large power hikes are tricky. Large torque increases are a lot easier though - controlling your boost to come on harder and higher at lower revs can give you quite a considerable power hike. I'd suggest an exhaust (including a decat/sports cat) an intercooler and boost control is a very good starting point. Whilst this is likely to get your factory claimed 280bhp to around 300bhp, your torque could rise from 270lbft to 350lbft. This will take a full second off your 0-60mph times, with sub 5.0s possible. Going much more than that takes a lot more money and a lot more time, but have a read round these forums as several people have achieved more - a couple have achieved a lot more.

There is plenty aftermarket support for these engines now, you just need to know where to look.

I myself sell Camshafts, Valve springs, Ported Cylinder heads, Adjustable cam gears.
IPP sell off the shelf forged pistons
Prism sell off the shelf forged conrods.
    Evo ARP main studs fit
3S-GE Toyota ARP head studs fit.

The only hard part is upgrading the turbos, but there are people working on a bolt on TD04 kit. and I'm working on a bolt on single turbo manifold.

what are your plans for modifying the car?

    Hey Adam,

My early plans are to do basically what Nick suggested; full exhaust, boost controller and a FMIC setup. I would also like to look into suspension as it is likely at some point i will take the car to a track day.

Later on i would definitely look into a turbo upgrade, personally i would stick to twins over a single. not too sure if i want to play around with internals just yet.

Greetings from Vancouver, I have a 97 Legnum with an autobox. There is some parts commonality with some of the DSM cars in north america but not much, mostly front suspension and steering components, if you need parts numbers for brakes and other consumables let me know i have been to hell and back getting parts and filters etc. I have looked extensively and any performance parts and almost all drivetrain parts need to be imported. Take VERY good care of your car in terms of maintenance and fluids. If anything goes wrong, you are bang i trouble as far as getting parts quickly or even finding someone who can work on the car. Get used to hearing "Never heard of it and I dont know how to fix it"

Edit: i should add that its a great car that I love driving, fantastic for Canadian roads and weather

Part #'s and interchangeability is definitely something i will need to know.

and i purchased it specifically because of our weather, i figured it would be able to handle winter roads no problem, and maybe even have some fun while i'm at it .

luckily it is not my only car, so if it does need to sit and wait for parts when something breaks on me i wont be too worried about transportation.

Cool man, when you get your car let me know. Definitely a few things to address right away and to keep an eye on. How many km on the import?

Welcome to the club! There's a few guys on this forum that sell bolt-on aftermarket parts.

The car has 115,000. which I realize is pretty high coming from japan. but it was an auction grade 4, with a fresh clutch and recent timing change.

Nice. I've heard good things about B-Pro. Where in Alberta are you? Also, I'd recommend becoming a paid member on here. The article and help database they have created is quite nice. Answered a lot of my questions before I had to look silly and ask them
