Auto box slipping in 1st and 2nd only

As the title says, it's a 2001 legnum Vr4 with the tiptronic/auto box, and the clutch slips in 1st and 2nd only, all the other gears are fine and don't slip. It happened suddenly, I.e I was driving around, then as I slowed and pulled away it started to slip even though it was fine earlier in the drive. Any ideas what could be causing this and how to solve it?

As you have not specified someone has to ask and it might as well be me.

What did you use to fill the auto box?

What did you actually do to test the level?

    Bye for Now!

Another idea to throw in would be to check your transfer box oil.

Thank you for the replies, I used Redline D4 ATF fluid 75w90.

Filled up to the filler hole, then checked the level via the dip stick to ensure the right level. I'll get it on a ramp and do the transfer box oil too.

I just find it a bit strange for it to slip in low gears but be ok in higher gears...?

Did you use Redline D4 ATF or 75W90? They are not the same and are meant for different applications.

This is what I used, I thought it was 75-90 but doesn't say that anywhere on it so I don't know where I got that from 😖

Redline state SPIII compatible so it should be fine.
You must measure the level hot, preferably go for a short drive, park on level ground, put the box in N and leave the engine running. Then check the level. I personally ignore the first few measurements as you can get a false reading from oil in the dipstick tube, so I clean the dipstick a few times then check the reading.

Ideally, when checking the oil level with the engine running, put the box in Tip first, go up a gear, down a gear a few times, back to N and check the level. That fills up all the nooks and crannys in the box and reveals the true level better.

Another thing to try is to reset the A/T ECU by pulling the battery connectors for a few minutes. Then the box will re-learn its characteristics and the gear changes may return to normal. This is usually recommended after every A/T oil change.
