final mod front radiator evo 4-6 or galant one??? keeping my air con

Ok im onto my last mod the radiator.
Im keeping my aircon so part of me say to use the proper galant one but i can only get this from china delivered means its £180+ postage +taxes. And still need fans
On other hand i can fit an evi 4-6 with flush fan kit for £180

My other issues is the galant rad is 52mm most evo ones ate 40-42mm have found a 52mm evo one but not sure if i can fit this easly with the td04s. Might needs some help on a good decision.

Im tempted by the 52mm evo 4-6 with flush fan kit i can cope with the mods on the evo needed was more will it fit with td04s?

the VR4 factory radiator core is not 52mm thick it is 28mm thick. when you see the specs of a rad it will be core thickness and not header tank thickness.

is your car auto or manual it makes a difference oil cooler in bottom of rad for auto box.

40mm core will be more than fine.
golfer rad 40mm core is a direct replacement auto manul dependant option.

search on here for golfer rad there was a group buy on them last year i think.

    Bye for Now!

If your going Evo go for an Evo 8 radiator.
The location of the 4-6 rad top hose pipe means you can't use the air box snorkel.
The Evo 8 top hose is the same location as VR4 but it is straight not angled. But your vr4 tip hose will reach it.
The bottom VR4 hose will fit into the Evo 8 bottom pipe, they are the same location.
The top mounts are virtually the same and you can use your vr4 brackets.
On the bottom the passenger side stud on the Evo 8 fits but you need to saw off the bottom drivers side alloy stud from the Evo 8 rad.
Thickness wise the combined 52mm and slim fans take up less space than the thin ve4 rad and huge thick fans, so even though rad is 52mm you gain more space.
Using the vr4 galant 52mm rad is the more straight forward option.
If your td04's fit with standard rad set up you will be fine with the evo8 rad and slim fans.
Also no problem with air con it is all clear.
You will need an atf cooler.

just as a matter of interest, where are you getting 52mm for the standard Factory VR4 rad from, rads are sized by the core thickness which is 28mm for a VR4 and about 18mm for a non turbo galant rad. i have one of those sat in my front room at the moment.

after market evo rads have 50mm core i have one of those fitted to my car and the Golfer one has a 40mm core.

    52mm?

Personally as you are going for td04 conversion I would go for the rad with the thinner 40mm core. To give you as much space as possible to fit the front turbo. 10mm can make all the difference.
I think I am going to struggle to get the td04 to fit with a 50mm core rad and slimline fans. The centre of my slimline fans is still 60 thick.

And trust me on the the vr4 factory standard rad has a 28mm core thickness so the upgrade to a 40mm core will be enough.
I just think I made a bad decision when I bought my 50mm core rad. I might have to swap it for a 40mm core rad. It also depends on how you mount the fans on the rad with ties directly though the rad or on a flow control backing plate so the only air that flows through the rad has to go throught the fans, there is no bypass. that can add 10mm to the fan spacing on the fans.

I used an evo 4-6 radiator. you need to move the drivers side lower mount across like 10mm ish but drilling the spot welds out and welding it back in or bolting it in with rivnuts

you can run a thick radiator with TD04's you just need to get push style radiator fans instead of the factory pull type fans. then mount them on the front of the aircon condenser.

If i can i want pull fans so the air hits all the rad will get a 40mm with 75deg thermostat. Always found a slightly lower stat tends to help on the track rather than upping the pressure as unless uprated headgaskets are fitted.

if you are keeping the air con rad then make sure you reseal the sides and top and bottom round the edge of the coolant rad to the air con rad, as it was originally like this. if the foam has disintegrated then there is a largish gap that air gets pulled through rather than getting pulled though the air con rad itself. especially if you put a massive intercooler in front of the air con rad.
the coolant rad does not see any direct air flow from the front of the car.

Why i was looking at 52mm rads as ive got air con rad and greddy in the way. Also why i dont want push fans. As its all extra in the way. Ive spoken to the company and getting 52mm rad but if its too thick they will exchange it for a 40mm

    bonus.

buy the way most slimline fans can push or pull air, just by reversing the connection. so you can fit them on either side of the rad.

    Talking of details...
Most aftermarket radiators for Evo 7-9 are 50mm thick. Those 40mm ish are more likely made by Mishimoto. You don't need such thick radiator. Evo highly tuned 500ish bhp vehicles can cope happily with stock 28mm thick radiators. All you need is efficient radiator (thick, doesn't mean efficient), my goal would be to get copper Koyorad from Japan. Seen few on Yahoo.
    Ex: Galant VR4
Running 268 HP ATW and 443 Nm torque at 0.9 bar
    Now: Lancer Evolution 8 FQ-300
Running 325 HP ATW and 510 Nm torque at 1.6 bar

I was looking into koyo rad as thats what i ran in my rx7 turbo but did have a cheap rad in my mr2 turbo with no probs. And i know a few people who run stock rads on bigger turbos. I need a rad as the plastic bit at the top has gone every brittle. And im not going to risk that rad on a good engine as its ok but i cant be assed with the hassle so im doing everything at once, rad & fans, alternator, power steering pump, belts, turbos the lot the only bit im wondering over at the mo is rods but not sure on this as to any good replacement + means more expence as then need head set and bolts. Rad is ordered gone 52mm with flush fans if too close i can send back and get 40mm one comes with fans bolted on so i know there all matched.

James, I've seen Koyo copper radiators few years back when I was still owner of vr4. Browsing thru Yahoo auctions (Japanese popular site) I found 2 or 3 of them.
I use Noppin service, quite good and reliable.
