    Vibration

Hi guys I'm getting an unusual vibration in my car. I feel it on the steering and also on the body. It's there at speeds between 110km/h to around 160km/h, weather on or off the throttle. Sometimes it's there other times it's not which has me stumped. Things I've done since getting the problem to troubleshoot are change rims and tyres (new) also speed balanced them, check suspension and align, switch inner cv joints. But the problem is still there. If anyone could point me in the right direction to troubleshoot from here it'll be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Check your front brake calipers are not sticking.

Thanks for the reply. I'll check them. If they are sticking will I feel the vibration on the brake pedal? Cause I don't feel any vibration on the pedals.

My newly purchased 2.0 galant is exhibiting exactly the same symptoms as your VR4. Vibration through steering and body then disappears until the next time I brake. best way to check is to monitor your wheel temps after driving. My front wheels are almost too hot to touch. Mitsi Calipers are notorious for pistons sticking and the slide pins. In my experience they really need refurbishing every 3 yrs or so.

Similar issue, no sign of brake binding. I'm thinking it might be the harmonic dampers on the front drive shafts, mine look pretty rotten.

    Vibration

Thanks for the reply. To be honest I have no clue what you're talking about so please forgive me. I know about the driveshafts/axels, tripods, inner cv joint and the cups on the g/b. So could you please enlighten me as to what you're talking about.

    Re harmonic dampener.
    Thanks in advance.

between the boots there is a rubber cylinder over the axle - since it seems to have no mechanical purpose I am assuming it was added to dampen drive train vibration - I might be wrong here, but I cannot find any mention of it otherwise, partbase shows it on the shafts, but it isn't a labelled part. replacement parts do not seem to have it in place either.

bang in the middle of this picture is what i mean (not our shaft, but a clear example I could find)

this part on my car is pretty rotten so I assume a bit loose.

I can't say if I ever noticed this on the shafts. I'll check for it tomorrow. Also thanks again for the feedback.

Never thought of checking those. I'll definitely get those checked. I always thought that they make noise when they going bad. Thanks for the advice.

And alternatively it might be worth checking the engine mounts too. With age the rubber will start to fail.

    Vibration

Thanks for the input Mark all mounts were changed out for the polyurethane ones in December. Will still check them tho.

Something I did not post in the original post is that when the vibration is there I would see the bonnet vibrating as well ( up and down movements more from the center of the right side edge going to the front ).
Don't know if with this additional information someone will be able to assist some more.

    2. fualty tires
    3. worn suspention bush

    Vibration

Hi Paul thanks for the reply. Changed two sets of wheels and tires and the problem is still there new tyres are toyo proxes 215/45/17 the only difference is the et of the rims. I think that it is either 35 or 38 which has the rim almost flush to the front fender. I also had the wheels balanced as well. So I positive it's not wheel and tires. The alignment shop checked the suspension prior to alignment and said that everything is good and I trust their ability. But I'll have another shop check the suspension just to be sure. Thanks for your advice.

    Vibration

Yep it's a manual and I believe that the vibration lessened a bit by changing wheels but I don't know if it is mind over matter.

Edit I had the transfer case replaced sometime last year but I can't remember if the vibration started at that point or if it was there from before. Brain getting old 🤔

dose it still/change vibrate if you drop the clutch ? you say you get it at 110-160kph ,are you sure its speed relatated or dose it change with rpm ?
if it wasnt there before you had it changed it could be the transfer or its not been put in right .

I'll take a drive later and see if it's still there when I drop the clutch. I pretty sure it's speed related because on the lower gears when the rpm goes up its not there. I really can't remember if it was or was not there when I had the transfer case replaced.
