    1998 Galant VR4 Project Philipines

Picked up a real nasty project. 1998 Galant VR4, it has been diced and hacked. We got it running okay with MAF senor disconnected. Connect the MAF it goes lean. When we bypass the fuel pump relay to high and crimp fuel pressure return line (takes it over 100 PSI) it runs better with MAF connected. Like I mentioned a lot of the parts are/were missing and we are doing what looks right. Any body know if this car has a MAP sensor also and if so were it is located? Also it has a MAF E5T08071. We think we it should be E5t07071. An Ideas

    There is no map sensor.
I can't tell you if the maf sensor is appropriate I'm afraid, but if the maf is good then disconnecting to improve running points at a boost pipework leak.

We have had the complete intake/boost system apart. New intercooler and blow off valve. It all checks out fine.

You can use a Volkswagen/Audi OBD 11 cable if you connect pins 1 and 4 together (to earth pin 1 & 4 together) they are cheap to buy on ebay, and you can buy Evoscan from the evoscan website, for $25, this is software for ego's but quite a lot of it works with the Legnum / Galant, it will let you read all the eco is doing and log things and you can also bleed the AYC system etc.
Mitsubishi do not use OBD2 software, just the connector, so normal obd2 readers won't work.
You can also use ECUflash cable, but they are more expensive, but they do allow you to do more.

Yep, a vag kkl cable with pins 1 and 4 joined plus evoscan is a great investment for diagnostics as you have a good understanding of cars.

The reason I suggested a boost leak is that the ecu has a default map for fuelling if the maf sensor fails. Unplugging the maf and the car running better can point to a bad maf but more often is due to a boost leak.

Thanks for the information. I will get the required pieces ordered today. we have a Ford NGS, GM Tech2, Toyota Techstream and of course a bunch of OBD2 scanners. But like I said first time playing with a Mit. Would like to get it working without having to piggyback a megasquirt or similar. Link to some pictures of the the 57 Nash 4.6 DOHC twinTurbo MS3 Pro, also a couple pics of the VR4 in there also. http://www.thunderboltracing.net

If you've got a VAG-COM KKL cable, you'll need to use EvoScan 2.7. Otherwise if you've got an OpenPort cable, you can use the latest version of EvoScan.
