    MTEC any good?

My newly acquired Galant VR4 is turning out to be a bit of a labour of love. Rather than drive and update/repair I'm taking it off the road to do a lot first.

Brakes are shot and ABS rings might be dead as there is a nasty noise from the front when braking at first until the red AYC comes on then itquietens a bit but no nasty feel in the pedal

Anyone used MTEC discs?? I'm looking at those with stainless lines if I can find a decent priced set and EBC yellow pads.
    Oh Matron

I have mtec. I have the two piece front discs for brembo fitment and the bell did not fit over the hub properly. I had to adjust the outside edge of the hub to allow the bell to mate to the hub face properly.
The plating on the discs was an optional extra and is not stopping a little surface corrosion.
Having said all that, they do their job okay.

I don't know a lot about the Brembo conversion so I'm intending to just buy the grooved discs front and rear with the EBC pads

I have had the Mtec front and rear discs with the black coating on the RVR for three months. Just been having a look and can't see any corrosion coming through the still-coated areas. I bought all four packaged with a full set of stock Brembo pads for about £245. Obviously, it's not a huge amount of time, but it has been during some of the colder, saltiest periods!

Sounds like a decent purchase then. All 4 discs are shot so bows the time to upgrade then.

Does anyone do a decent set of stainless lines at reasonable money? MTEC said send me your old ones and I'll make them but that sounds expensive lol

Exact Engineering have a kit for the VR-4: KMIT0010

Their price list shows it as £88.25 for all four lines.

I have also bought the same discs, and they do not fit. The outside edge of the hub is too big. I thought that the evo had same size hub, but can it be that the vr4 has couple of mm bigger?

Did you have to grind much material of the hubs?

    No, not much.
I put the car in the air and started the engine then put the car in gear to get the hub spinning. Then I used a grinding disc in a dremmel to shave the outer edge of the hub. It only took a few minutes per side. I tuess i could have done it quicker with an angle grinder but that seemed excessive!

Good that only little has to be removed, will try grinding the hubs. Thanks!

That would work also depends on the overall price difference really, I'll take a look now.

Excellent tip there I wasn't aware of the company st all. Looks like I'll go standard discs for now with the pad upgrade and lines.

Excellent source of parts, I've already planned to replace the track rod ends and drop links etc

I've been running the cheapest standard discs, and Carbotech XP-8 pads, and a set of Goodridge braided hoses, and the braking is fantastic.

The pads aren't cheap, and they're VERY dusty - but it's worth it for the braking performance, which gets better the hotter the pads get!

    Hi Michael
Not the question you asked but I thought I'd mention that EBC Yellow stuff pads only lasted approximately 5K miles on mine when I was running standard brakes. They had good initial bite and didn't fade but they were extremely dusty. I tried EBC Red stuff after that and they lasted approx 10K miles, were almost as good performance wise and nowhere near as dusty. IMO Yellow stuff are not worth the money and best avoided on our cars. In all honesty I didn't find either set much better than the Pagids I ran before I upgraded to Brembo.

    What a laugh

I use EBC yellow stuff pads front & rear with EBC crossed grooved & drilled discs again front & rear with standard calipers & I'm running nearly 600bhp & the cars done 5k or so & their is loads of pads left

In fact I would say there is only a couple of mm gone of the pads from new

Nice of you to laugh at my experience Steve.
I guess I must have got a duff batch because I'm not a particularly heavy breaker and was very surprised the fronts had almost totally disintegrated. And the car weights aren't to dissimilar are they? I presume your talking about your Skyline right?
I'm pleased to hear they work for you though as that did tarnish my opinion of EBC.

Ollie I wasn't laughing at your expense & I apologies if it read that way

I was just referring to general threads about brakes Etc

This type of thread comes up quite often about upgrading brakes either pads, discs or calipers

I was very skeptical about driving something with that amount power/weight with standard calipers but I was gob smacked with the braking capability of just upgrading just discs pads

And again bud I was not taking the p!ss as it's the first I saw of this thread & was just commenting overall
