    Thumbs up Newbie from Tokyo

    Hi Everyone

Joined the forum today because on an impulse i bought a 97 Legnum VR-4 TYPE S from a Japanese auction with just a translated auction sheet to go by.
To be honest it was pretty cheap so was within my risk appetite. :-)

Currently I have a family car in Tokyo and only one parking space, so I am considering making this my family car, or shipping it straight to some kind of tuning shop and spend some money 'improving' it. I called up Sigma in Osaka, and they basically told me to forget it for this engine which I thought was a lttle harsh. Then they recommended Kansei service in Nara, which seems a bit of hassle moving it around the country.

So my plan is to bring it to Tokyo, get it looked over/serviced at a Mitsubishi delaership. Then decide what to do with it.

So guys (and girls), what do you recommend? Its very low mileage, looks completely original in black colour. Of course we don't yet know what the garage will say, but assuming its just a normal light service that it needs, what would you guys do with it?

My problem is I have a world of JDM originals I can possibly own, and am wondering if thi is a long termer, or if I should just flip it.

As soon as I get the car here, a week or so, I will post some pictures.

Hi and welcome to the club.

VR4 are great family cars. for the money i dont think there is a better one out there. when you consider the practicality and performance.

What is the year and model of the car is it pre facelift or facelift model. auto or manual?

ECU are tunable in thre VR4 dont let anyone tell you they are not you just need to know how.

what light is on the dash we can help with that. there is a simple way to show the fault codes flashed onto the dash
and also a full diagnostic tool to monitor all engine peramiters, gear box, ayc, etc.

anyway get some pictures up and pay the £10 club full membership for a year and it will pay you back in bucket loads of help and info that is not available to none paid up members.

    have fun

Thanks Dave, will definitely pay and sign up in the next few days. It's a 97 , auto (deliberate choice for Tokyo heavy traffic where we live now) so assumed it was pre-facelift.
I am going to get the mileage certified by the organisation that do it here, because it is ridiculously low, 22000 km to be precise!

Hence I am thinking of keeping it as standard as possible. My agent should be taking some good pictures tomorrow , can't wait to see and share them.

I have been looking at multiple JDM turbo models , usually estates, but these seem so much cheaper than the equivalent Subarus etc.

    Hi and welcome!

Dave has said most of the basics! If you need some help tuning, for the cost of a plane ticket for one of us, we will certainly get you some good gains!

Everything points to the mileage being correct, can't be many with lower mileage in existence

Around 13,000 miles. And the car does look amazingly clean!
Optional bbs wheels and warm spec with mmcs from the pictures.

Your current Wagon is interesting too!

It looks like a good purchase, with mileage that low it will appeal to more people than most. I hope you enjoy your time with it!

Thanks Nick, the only cloud to this silver lining is that it seems mad to modify this car at all. Think I will just run it stock and get it as good as it can be.
Quick question, the gear selector cover seems to be missing from one of the photos I have seen. Is this a common issue? I think I saw a part for sale for 100 quid, seems a little steep.
Car should be delivered Oct 4th, then I will give it a good clean and post some more photos.
Nice forum by the way, thanks for all your kindness.

Yep, common issue. It's a flexible plastic cover in two parts iirc and I think it just cracks and falls.

I made some of those gear selector covers some time ago. Can't remember what I did with them. I was going to make them for people but someone came up with a cheap place to buy them from so I didn't bother.
I can't remember who or where that came from.
He might have even put a template up on the forum so you could make your own.

Pretty sure I have a selector cover that I was going to template before installing. But I haven't yet. Only been seven or eight years lol

Don't recall who Dave is on about, but it definitely was not me!

The VR-4 looks in amazing condition. Quite possibly the only uncracked original engine cover now in existence

Does anyone know of a tuning shop in Japan that has a good reputation for working with Legnums?
Problem for me as an expat is that I don't have a garage or any tools for working on cars

    Thanks

It is the very thin plastic bit that stops dust and crumbs going down past the stick part of the selector and the black plastic base.
The plastic is very brittle and is you push it, it will crack and fail.
I made a new one from a template I made. But made it out of the wrong colour material. Cloudy acytal sheet.

Everything looks good, tyres will need replacing for Shaken, might go for 4 season three, then get some larger volks in the spring with a lower profile and higher speed rating tyres.
Car has a nice rubber cargo liner, and I love the touch face tv/environment control.
Slightly surprised to find an installed turbo timer, still trying to work out how it has only done 20k km. Documentation and books arrive tomorrow. Will get it seviced and cleaned and post the results
