Strange groaning noise?

I have a strange noise that I can only compare to the old Budweiser advert with the frogs, strange, I know! But the noise reminds me of that instantly. It's a constant groaning noise that is audible up to around 35mph. The noise is only present when the accelerator is pressed. The pitch of the noise increases with acceleration. I won't be able to get it to a garage till after Christmas now, so any ideas guys? It's a 2000 V6 Sport manual, by the way.

Id guess a wheel bearing or bad tracking or cv joint?
does the pitch change with engine revs (should be able to test 2-4th pretty easily over that range)? that will tell you which end of the drive train to check (since its is speed & throttle dependant)

if you have a 4 post near you (or a good jack & stands & level ground), could try running wheels off the ground, see what you can hear.

Oh ok, interesting. I kind of ruled out wheel or suspension components in my head, as I thought that would make the same pitch sound at whatever speed. I was thinking it could be the gearbox whining as the pitch of the sound changes depending on the revs/speed.
