Hi Guys. Help needed Stafford area just bought vr4 needs looking over.

    Hello there !
bought my first VR4, I've had the non turbo models before( still have one) .
Recently bought VR4, would like it looking over by a knowledgeable person.
It has what I think is CV shudder so that needs fixing, and any other issues a VR4 wizard may find.
    All help gratefully received.
    Thanks Guys.

Hi and welcome to the club.

Post up some pictures... we like pictures.

Not sure what you are describing but if you are getting a shudder from the gearbox then it almost certainly needs an ATF change.

    Hi Tar,
I am still trying to find my way around the site ! I have posted some pictures in my vehicle section, and they are upside down, and i cannot figure out how to turn them round the right way lol.
I have read a few posts on here and elsewhere and it describes what i think is the inner driveshaft cv joint shudder or propshaft uj's.
I have a certain amount of mechanical knowledge from my trade and years of fixing my cars and bikes, I also have a garage that I use for bigger jobs or those I do not want to tackle.
The golden rule with these cars appears to be take it to an expert, so thats who I am looking for, anyone local to me, although distance really isnt a problem.

Hi there, im not far from you in St.Helens
It does sound like transmission issues from your discription, so as long as you havnt got any transmission lights flashing id go for a ATF change from my experience there won't be any transmission filter to replace on the VR4's. The correct oil is: ATF-MM/SP3 approx 5-6 ltrs sould be enough but after refilling you'll need to run through all the gears and then while in park with the engine running recheck to level.
Other things to look out for...... AYC Pumps can be problematic if the red AYC light comes on.
Front lower ball joints can develop a knocking noise and in worse case scenario ive had the joints separate.
Steering rack track control rods develop play that cause mot issues.
Rear wheel bearings can start rumbling without feeling any play so dont be confused thinking its your rear diff on its way out. (if the diff oil is clean its probably ok)
If you have any more questions about anything vr4 just ask.
    Dave

If you are changing the ATF fluid and changing 5-6 littres then you have only changed what is in the sump. The system holds nearly 9 litres and most of us would choose to do a full flush if we suspected dodgy ATF. For a full flush I would say have 12-15 litres available.
If the shudder is under light acceleration and gets better with hard acceleration then it is almost certainly gearbox. If it is bad under heavy acceleration and gets better with light acceleration then it is almost certainly the front inner CV cup.

There is an awesome thread to check out:

    Have fun!

    Thanks Nick,

That was one of the threads that I have read, and from your post its the second type of shudder, eases off on deceleration.
Reckon I will take a drive to Saint Helens.......

Yes Nick is correct, giving a full flush of the system will always be better and you will get a very good indicator if that is nessassery when you drain out the sump. Can i ask how many miles the vr4 has done and service history of ATF oil changes?

@Dane Lucas @Nick Mann on here knows more about VR4's than anyone else I know. He probably isn't that far from you (Redditch) and I know that he just loves working on the cars!
If he has the time, he may be able to help you out.

    I wasn't suggesting any competition @mitsiboyblue

Just offering options to the OP.

I'd also usually recommend Eurospec in Guilford as they are very knowledgeable as well. I didn't as they may be too far away in this case.

    Hi Dane,

    Welcome to VR-4 ownership!

I've just posted up in the meets section, an having an impromptu Garage Day next Saturday (6th), one thing we may be doing is a gearbox flush, so while we're doing one, we may as well do two!

Also a good opportunity to have a chat and ask some questions as you see someone work on one! If you're free, feel free to pop in

    Garry
