    Removing exhaust centre silencer

Have any of you folks removed the centre silencer on your exhaust? I have a 2.5" 5zigen exhaust which has a centre silencer and rear backbox. I'm considering removing the centre silencer making it a straight through exhaust with just the backbox.

For those that have done this.. did it affect the power delivery and how did it change the sound of the exhaust.

    Cheers

The little turbos do respond to a free flowing exhaust. The exhaust gets louder obviously but the big issue for me is droning. In a manual VR4 this is not so bad but in an auto the drone seems to be at 2500rpm ish which is where the torque converter seems to be happy under small loads. Going up a slight hill and holding a steady speed makes the whole car boom.

I'm not sure how relevant this is to you though.

Daren, I assume you did choose kinda budget option, but IMO it's not the solution. You won't improve much gas flow with 2.5" catback, but you increase bass drone and loudness of exhaust which is very irritating after while.
Much better is to get 3' option and 1 to 2 silencers inline. Quite popular option in Evo community are fabrications of Russ Fellows (suggesting that due to similarity between Evo 4-6 and Galant VR4 cat-backs), custom tailored cat-back as client require with no gas restriction. They are quite reasonably priced.
    Ex: Galant VR4
Running 268 HP ATW and 443 Nm torque at 0.9 bar
    Now: Lancer Evolution 8 FQ-300
Running 325 HP ATW and 510 Nm torque at 1.6 bar

That's what I was looking at, freeing up some flow. I considered a 3" exhaust a while back but when I looked into it I read for my 270 odd bhp at the hubs a 2.5" would be fine. I would also need some 2.5" to 3" downpipes making up so would need to look into the cost.

Does a 3" system make a noticeable difference?

With 3" system you will get better mid to top range power/torque. It's just relief from exhaust back pressure building up with revs.
