    Hello, some advise needed

    Hi,

I'm Sam based near Skipton in West Yorkshire. I've just bought a Galant VR4 Estate or Legnum VR4 auto in a dark Purple colour (bit of a barn find that came out of the blue and couldn't say no to it) and wanted to find out some bits about them. The one I've bought seems to be a completely standard car and is a UK car not an import which I'm told is rare? Are there many differences between an import and a UK car?
Also just wanted to find out anything I should know about them, thanks in advance!

Welcome to the club. There is loads of info here, I would have a read.

All cars are imports. A few were brought in my MMC and the only differences are the rear badge on the estate says Galant instead of Legnum. The fuel filler neck has a restrictor. The dash is converted to MPH and a rear fog light is fitted. The UK cars usually suffer much more rust due to limited undersealing however some early imports not suitably protected can also be susceptable to the tin worm.

Post up some pictures, we like pictures.

Ah right, good to know, thanks!

I haven picked the car up yet so only have one photo of it sat in the corner of a shed looking a little sorry for its self, once I've picked it up next weekend I'll get some photos on then I'm sure everyone will be able to tell me what I've bought.

Think it is also a type S? I know there is a type V but I don't know the differences between them all, complete novice here!

    A Type S has AYC. A Type V doesn't.

As Tim said - all of them came off the production line as Japanese Market. Some were importes into the UK by Mitsubishi and became known as UK cars, but they were modified for the UK market once here and there was never any European Type Approval.

Pictures are awesome and we can potentially tell you a bit about what you have from photos too.

    I hope you enjoy it!

Finally picked this up. Great car! Will get some photos put on.

A question some of you might be able to help with is the AYC.
When I start the car all is fine the three green AYC lights come on and then go off that are at the bottom of the the rev gauge.
When's it's been running and moved for a minute or a so a small red AYC light comes on in the bottom right corner of the instrument cluster. This to me looms like there is a fault with it.

    Any common problems? Thanks

The red AYC light means there is an issue with the AYC system.
You need to get the error codes from the dash.
Use the flashy dash method to get the codes.
Just search this forum for flashy dash.

    And
    Search for
    Complete diagnostic error codes
    For what the codes mean.

Post them up and we can advise you on the best action to take.

The most likely option is that the ayc pump is not reaching pressure. The most likely scenario is the pump is worn. The fix for this is a new pump or to fit an adjustable pressure switch, @MPBVr4 can supply you with one. This is also indicated by the pump running for a long time. Start the car, move it forwards a few metres and the pump will start. You should hear it under the drivers side rear of the car. If it runs for a ling time and then stops when the red ayc light pops up then I stand by my armchair diagnosis.
Other possibilities are poor fluid, a lazy or broken pressure switch or a stuck relay. The relay is mounted on the inner wing by the battery.

    Great, thankyou!
Car is away just getting the front bumper painted at the moment so as soon as it's back I will get the codes out of it and also see if I can hear the pump running.
The car has been stood a good few years in the back of a garage so that probably hasn't helped.

Does anyone have a link or a walk through to the flashy dash method, as links I find on here it won't let me open them. Thanks

The process the first time around is slightly longer winded than any future attempts.

    Step 1) Click Here
Step 2) Complete the Club Membership Process
    Step 3) Pay £10
Step 4) Access all the links you don't have access to at the moment.

I'm joking obviously, But it's well worth doing it.
