New Galant VR4 owner, ST Helens

    Hi Guys

I have bought a Galant VR4 a couple of months ago UK version. I will post some pics. Love the car but I am having a few issues the AYC red light comes on after about 30sec of driving the green lights do work on the first corner if your quick before the red light. The ABS light is on but this is my fault caught a wire when installing the power cable for my amp so I know what the problem is here. But my main concern is the fuel consumption around 10mpg seems worse on the motorway at 80mph really eats the fuel. I will point out it has been decatted by the previous owner but apart from this seems standard. I have fitted a K and N filter and had a cat back exhaust. Any advice/ help greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Steve

    Hi and welcome

The AYC red light is probably due to a pump that is no longer managing to make and sustain the factory-set pressure level.

You can confirm this by performing the "flashy dash" diagnostic technique to get all the fault codes - see the link in my signature for details.

If it is low pressure, you could try fitting an adjustable pressure switch, which @MPBVr4 should be able to supply I've been running mine for ~6 years and ~80k miles with one of his switches, after I started getting the red light come on due to insufficient pressure when warm.

The fuel consumption on these is bad, but not normally that bad! I'd expect ~18 around town, and ~25 on a sensible run down the motorway. I'm assuming you've calculated this by brimming the tank, resetting the trip counter, driving for a while then brimming the tank again? If you're doing any other method, then you won't be getting a reliable result - the fuel gauges on these cars aren't the most accurate, and the low fuel light can come on at a variety of times, so can't be trusted as a known "there is X litres left in the tank" to use as an MPG calculation.

What K&N filter is fitted? Is it a panel filter, or a cone filter? Cone filters are known to cause issues with fuelling on these cars, as they disrupt the airflow through the MAF sensor, and can lead to big overfuelling. Or, it could be a failed/failing injector, which is putting more fuel through.

I hope you're enjoying the car, even with the little niggles, and with our help we'll get your car ship-shape again!

    Hi Garry

Thanks for the quick response. For calculating the fuel I will take your advice I was just calculating it from the price at the pump to the light coming on. It is just a panel filter. I will go and do the flashy dash technique and get back with the results although I suspect there to be a few.

    Thanks
    Steve

    Hi Garry, Malc

Ok did the flashy lights and got the below
ABS light 15 and 11 again I think this has to do with the wire I cut by mistake oops.
    AYC light 82,26,21

    Thanks
    Steve

Ahh, I didn't read carefully enough that you'd damaged a wire related to the ABS - one from the wheel speed sensors - more specifically front right

The AYC uses all the wheel speed sensors (shared with the ABS) - so that'll explain codes 21 and 26 on AYC Code 82 I think is that it's unable to maintain pressure.

Thanks for that. I will attempt to repair the wire next weekend and get back to you( it's in a really bad place so may take some time, it's behind the firewall at the grommet the wires run through) for code 82 is this what the adj pressure switch will sort out?

    Thanks
    Steve

Error 82 is usually due to low pressure in the pump, so an adjustable switch is likely to get your AYC up and running again - you will probably want to do a fluid change for the pump/hydraulic circuit too whilst you're at it

First off though, check the level and condition of the AYC fluid, the reservoir for this is located in the boot near the RH lights.

    Hi Gary, Malc

I have finally fixed the wires for the ABS so that light has gone now. Have attempted to bleed the AYC and the fluid coming out seems nice and clean.
I think I now need the switch.

    Thanks
    Steve

    Hi Dave.

Yes I am in St Helens so you should be close.
The pump is running you can hear it.
I got good flow from the drivers side bleed valve a few times but still think it's still got a lot of air in it as it was flowing in fits and starts.
The passenger side I was only able to get a constant drip.

Would be good to meet up at some point when you have time.

    Thanks
    Steve

Dripping from one side and good flow on the other could point to solenoid control valve issues on yours there is 3.
1 direction control & 2 valve control. Anything linked to ABS,steering & AYC can cause the light. I been repairing these systems & pumps for good few years from Evo4-X, Lancer Ralliart & the Vr4's. granted they are getting fewer now.
If you have Red warning light on AYC and you priviously had ABS system wiring faults there might just be DTC's 'diagnosis trouble codes' still in the AYC system that need reading and clearing. I can also do this.
Not sure of the rules on here if i can give my contact details ie, mobile/ e-mail etc but we need to meet up i think.
Im out of the country at the moment at my wifes family home but always checking CLUBVR4 posts.
If we can get to chatting privately I'd be happy see what i can do help a Vr4 owner, think we all need to stick together

I would have piped up earlier about this. But I don't have any spare time to work on other people's cars at the moment. I have so much to do on my cars they have been neglected for years no while I have been working on other people's cars .

I presume you have evoscan to drive the ayc system.
What actuators are you using to bleed the ayc system.
The ones you need to use are not the obvious ones.

If you don't have evoscan then you will need it to bleed the system correctly.

Yes me to, Im also in same situation working full time, family but im thinking on this occasion... maybe... something simple or at least help to pinpoint a problem area.
Not using evo scan no, im using MUT3 genuine dealer level diagnostic, i used to have my own Independent Mitsubishi garage about 4 half years ago before mum became ill and i had to stop. i still have all tools equipment, manuals etc but now im using only for myself & friends.
Thats why i offered plus to find i have mutual friend in my town, its a no brainer!
