    V6 woes...

I've had a noise that sounds similar to what I can only describe as a monotone sheep 'baaing' haha. A groaning noise as such. Lately this noise has been getting louder and is now audible at speeds up to around 35mph. I was hoping it was sticking brakes but I've noticed this morning it can now be heard at idle. When I push the clutch pedal in, the noise disappears. Am I right in thinking its probably the clutch release bearing and I'm gunna be needing a whole new clutch?

It could be input shaft bearing. Is it worse when accelerating or decelerating?

Worse when accelerating and is audible up to around 45mph on second count. It gets higher pitched when the speed increases also. I think I can rule out the clutch release bearing as I'm sure that makes more of a rattle than a groaning noise if I'm not mistaken?

If it's worse when accelerating and decelerating (but quiet in transitions between the two), and with clutch down, then yes it sounds like input shaft bearing.

I'm afraid it's a gearbox out and apart job, but the part itself is only about £10 I would try to avoid driving it if possible.

Time to search for a new gearbox then by the sounds of it...yay. I've driven it for a few months with a slight whirring noise but its gotten much worse these last few weeks, hence a trip to the garage today.

I've now been told it's most likely the 'lay shaft'...whatever that is. I'll probably go down the route of a recon rather than buying a second hand box. Can anyone recommend a specialist either in the Lincolnshire area or the Merseyside area. Cheers.

It's the input shaft bearing in 99% of gearbox whine issues like you describe.

For a rebuild you can't beat a guy on the MLR called Clive.W but he is based in Bedford and only wants the gearbox, not the full car.

Why do people just go - I'll have a used part I know Nothing about ?
Yes you might strike gold and get lucky BUT in the case of having to change an entire gearbox I'd rather be sure it's fixed

Because not everyone has a spare £1200+ to get a gearbox removed, reconditioned and refitted. Yes it's a gamble, but a £200 gamble on a second hand box is not the end of the world if it goes wrong. Also, the V6 boxes are not notorious for having issues.

They are notorious for input shaft bearing failure.

Yeah I agree if your doing the job yourself - take the chance on a used item - it's only your time (and knuckles )
But if your getting a garage to remove and fit a used box then it becomes very expensive if the used box isn't up to the job

I see where you're coming from. I got hold of a used box and had it swapped in for the old one by the garage for £550 all in - that's including the price of the box. I found this very reasonable compared to over double for a recon, and it works fine. Just had a bit of luck with it I guess (touch wood).
