Evo coilpacks will fit with a bit of manoeuvring! That’s what I’m running on mine now, not had any issues and much cheaper that genuine vr4

Interesting @ATatar, are these the Evo 5-8 ones?

The ones I bought were on eBay (says they fit Evo VII & VIII, and Outlander). I bought them as a gamble to whether they would fit or not. The connection to the loom is a direct fit. The rubber part that connects between the coil pack and the spark plug is too short on the Evo coilpack, but it is removable. So, I removed the Vr4 coil pack rubber part and connected it to the new Evo one - so it now easily reaches the spark plug. The tabs that bolt down the coil pack to the engine don't line up together, if I remember right I may cut off one of the tabs so it was bolted down by only one bolt (but one is secure enough, wasn't moving!).

When I've got time I'll post some pictures of how they sit. A bit of hassle to fit, although At £8 a pack its worth the hassle to me!!

Thanks Alex for the explanation. That'll work for me, as I've got existing coilpacks to butcher, but not for @Andy-VR4 as he's not got any donor coils.

I’m glad the explanation helps! I believe one version of the FTO or Lancer coilpack has a long rubber part that could be used to replace the Evo’s short connection. In fact I think theyre longer than VR4 coilpacks if I remember right, so the coil pack would then sit higher and need spacers between itself and the engine (and longer bolts).
Could be an option when a vr4 donor coilpacks is unavailable. Not sure of the cost, probably still cheaper than sourcing genuines I’d imagine.

Here’s a picture of the coilpacks on my engine, far left is a genuine vr4 coil pack, middle and right are the new evo coilpacks. As you can see where the rust is on the right coil pack is where I had to trim away the metal tab in order for it to fit and clear the middle coilpack - the same will need to be done to the middle coilpack once I replace the left vr4 coilpack with an evo one.

Weird question but are the Evo ones better than the VR-4 standard ones, and in turn are the VR-4 different to the other V6 ones?

(I will check the manuals but thought I'd ask as obviously we have some experts here!)

I’m unsure whether they are better or not, for me it was a matter of having it function for a fair price! I haven’t noticed any change in power since replacing the coilpacks... but I imagine that there is a good choice of upgradable coil packs for the Evos - being so popular compared to vr4. And now knowing they fit our cars means we should be able to use upgraded evo coil packs instead of standard.

Awesome Alex, I have just purchased a set of 4 Evo coil packs. Obviously I only need 3 so if you want the other one give me a shout and Ill send it over.

Thanks Alex, seems like a pretty simple mod - like Rikki I've also grabbed some to give it a try on my Legnum - if they work out OK I might get some more for my Anglia!

Wohay! I'm glad my improvising is helping others! Be prepared for a tight fit though, but for the price and availability I think theyre a good choice. Thanks for the offer Rikki, sounds good, I will let you know! I have seen a few sets of performance evo coil packs, quite expensive though.. about £150 for a pair. If they were worth it then could buy 3 pairs between two of us so 3 coil packs would work out £225. But that's a lot of money, and I don't really think it will be worth it. Garry, you have a vr4 engine in your Anglia??!

Also Judder asked if standard Evo coil packs are better than Vr4 coil packs, I was thinking about this...

The Evos have 2.0L engines and run one coil per two cylinders.. so one coil essentially powers 1.0L worth of the engine. Where as the VR4 is 2.5L and also runs one coil per two cylinders, but each cylinder is about 0.42L, so... one coil powers 0.84L worth of engine. As the Evo coil packs have to spark more internal area, they should be uprated accordingly!

    First, excellent contribution

Second, i think the cylinder pressure will matter more than the volume (otherwise we could use dirt cheap coils of a NA lancer engine )
The evos (i picked a 7) are reported to use about 8.8:1 and 1.2bar, within spitting distance of the 6A13tt for compression but ~0.4 bar more. so cylinder pressure can be expected to be 285 psi at full chat vs 225 psi. so you are right they should have a stronger spark, this might deteriorate our plugs faster, however.

Thank you! And yes very fair point, the displacement isn't what I should have been comparing when talking about turbo engines! Maybe the combination of Evo coilpacks and uprated spark plugs would prevent them deteriorating too quickly.

At the price point I've just paid, I could consider them consumables!
