    UK roads strike again!

Looks like a bit of a mess under there, but also looks like it's in great hands, and should be better than new when finished!

I've got to get mine in the air, get underneath it and uncover what's going on with mine, it too will need a lot of work I imagine.

Well, after we were happy with our fight with rust, and all gone, repairs been done. Then it came the time for undersealing and rust proof jobs.
First, there were 2 - 3 (depends of area) coats of epoxy primer with 18 to 24 hours intervals. That includes all closed profiles sprayed with nozzles which give you like mist pattern. Anyway few more bits I've learned about automotive paint work.

Strut towers and wheel arches were first to treat:

And final coat of underseal applied week after epoxy primer. Once applied, another week to let it dry and clear coat of wax was applied, closed profiles etce were foolded with wax promptly, then rolling shell side to side every 1 hour for better distribution inside the profiles. Once done, Evo was left for 4 days to dry.

    And that's the story end...
On 26th January I went back to Poland to pick up my freshly refurbed vehicle. Flight by Ryanair and then few train changes to be greeted by that sight:

    IMAG8941.jpgIMAG8942.jpgIMAG8943.jpgIMAG8944.jpgIMAG8945.jpgIMAG8946.jpg

Well, whilst drop off my E8 prior to refurb job (September 2018), we talk about my future projects and plans regarding my Evo, and I mentioned that maybe in 2019 would be done a full respray job to refresher look and replace that awful cheap clear coat by Mitsubishi.
So, Mariusz (chap who did all work) was bored by long winter nights and after he finish with underseal, he decided to give some seriuos detailing to my E8, several coats od silicates and wax as he said, should last up to 2 years till I get to the point of laquer respray. Amaizing effect. Also all lines between panels were corrected (I mean bumpers and fenders). So she's been just like new from factory. Amazing! And that's because of one's boredom.

Next, there was 250 miles drive to my parents home in south Poland. Plenty of snow on main roads (5 to 10 inches) covering black ice. Well, not good for my summer tyres. After exhausting journey got there at night. Managed to get few snap shots of the roads...

    IMAG8948.jpgIMAG8949.jpg

Following day I took a liberty of having fun in snow, and crazy donuts. There is great area where you can go wild in ex- coalmine, abandoned industrial estate. Great fun it was. Just to be greeted by more snow next day and thick ice cover from rain (was raining at night with temperatures way below zero!):

    IMAG8953.jpgIMAG8952.jpgIMAG8956.jpg

That didn't matter, because it was day to get my E8 back to UK. I've managed to book flat bed carrier for some good money to take Evo from home to home. For several reasons: MOT run out whilst floor refurb, had summer tyres on her and didn't want to take a chance on snowy and icy roads across the Europe, and after all, costs of flat bed was just 5% highter that cost of ferry and petrol. Simple choice.
    Let's go home!

Awesome. It is 7 years since I gave mine a treatment and it could do with another go now.at the moment I have neither the money or the time so it will wait a while. I hope I can do it as well as yours has been done!

Looking at the bad pictures in this thread... well compared to my legnum, I'd eat my dinner off of the underside of your car!

Very nicely done though I must say, good workmanship and I was surprised at the total cost to get it done. I may well consider something similar myself

Hey Swinks, Thats awesome would it even be close to get that work done in the UK? I imagine thats why you went to mates. I reckon they might get a few legnums now. Just need to rob a bank

Ha ha ha. Yes, bloody distance from UK, innit? That's why I used the trip as holidays and vehicle mending in one
He did already rescue 2 Starions and Colt Mirage (all from early 80s) for German customers and locally 1 white COTY Legnum. Awsome job. But mostly he has to deal with effin American muscle cars from 70s

Excellent thread full of all the details, lots of pictures, would your friends be able to do legnum since body panels don't seem to exist? I would send my car there for that price

I can ask for you Lee @Layton1985
If anything it has to be autumn/winter job. He's quite busy with doing repairs and beware that it is not his job but hobby. Also building sills or other panels from scratch (bashing piece of metal ) will increase the price quite much.
Which exactly body panels are beyond repair Lee?

Front strut towers, both sills and the rear boot floor panel what I know of so far, at the moment I may buy another vr4 in better condition with low mileage, not sure yet, going to make my mind up shortly, have you seen the 2 legnums on Ebay? One is at £,6000 and the other is at £7000 buy it now, they are not in the country yet but seems a lot for a legnum? Does anyone pay that much for them?

Front strut towers - quite difficult job because: there are no aftermarket restoration panels ready to weld in, towers are made of several thin sheets of metal hence patching them up is not recommended because chances of locking trapped rust between layers of metal are very high. In most cases it's cut off rusty strut tower and weld in healthy one from donor vehicle. Tricky because vehicle geometry depends of that job.
Side sills repair panels are available. Had seen one in Poland, they are the same for Galant n/a, the same apply to rear wheel arch panels. Unfortunately rear floor panel must be taken off donor vehicle. It can be Galant n/a estate.
    Hard difficult decision to make.
    1. You can source donor vehicle, and cheapest option would be healthy Galant estate n/a.
    2. You can buy several new panels from Amayama:
    - rear floor MR376461 at 364 GBP
    - strut tower FR MR241990 at 206 GBP
    - strut tower FL MR241989 at 206 GBP
    - side sill L MR439087 at 382 GBP
    - side sill R MR439088 at 382 GBP
on top quite big shipping costs (size of panels) from Japan and customs.
Regarding purchase fresh mint Legnum. back in an old days, mint import fresh examples were 4500 - 5500 quid. But there was bigger market, more vehicles available. Now, when Legnum gets into "classic/vintage" area I assume there wouldn't be many to source in Japan, hence price gone up, also bare in mind, that in 2007-2012 sterling was worth 20% more than today (there was better exchange rate), so I assume that today fresh mint example from Japan would fetch 6k easily.

If you seek low miles and rust free, then that's the cost.
I would imagine you can shave a K or 2 off by doing it yourself, but then there is the trade-off in your effort and the risk of buying from auction sight unseen.

Inspirational. I nearly bought an Evo 9 back in April. It looked immaculate and at one point I had a £2k deposit down on it. I asked the seller too many questions and they pulled out of the deal. I'm glad in a way as the car had been involved in a front end smash and then repaired. They chose not to acknowledge this. I guess I dodged a bullet with that one. Excellent to see the restoration work you have done here. If only there were decent ones readily available.
