Hi lads, Im as confused as ever, about to do a flush following the instructions in the posts but following a link to the workshop manual it says use HIGH QUALITY ETHYLENE GLYCOL ANTIFREEZE COOLANT, is this the same for the VR4?
Would someone be kind enough to put a direct link to the correct coolant to buy, I have a Halfords 10 minutes away so a link to Halfords would be great!

    Many thanks
    Paul

That one contains Ethylene Glycol. Just avoid the pink OAT longlife stuff, really!

ill research the best coils and follow the wiring diagram, I need to know if Im on the right track, I aim to get the coils new, get some connectors from a breakers? and purchase some additional wires, a plate for the rear and some O rings as spacers for the plate. What do you think?

I don't know a great deal about the COP set up, I've only ever had the standard set up!

my coil packs keep failing and new ones are too expensive, I fancy fixing it once and for all.

What's pink? Is your existing coolant already pink?

yeah, no problem tho ill continue to flush it out, ive bought the blue stuff now. I would have flushed it anyway. Just didnt expect it to take so many rad drains/fills.

Ive done ten litres of de ionised already, if I knew more about cars I would have done it the propper way and took the bolts out of the block, Its all good tho its not a problem. At least the water looks clean.

I don't know what to say now! I didn't even consider that you already had the pink stuff in there! Had you had any cooling system issues before? Either sort does not like mixing even with just traces of the other. It can cause sludging, blocking radiators and any other small gauge pipework. If you can, I'd flush it fully several times over to be as sure as possible.

This is how I flush the cooling system, it is not technically correct but it gets the job done.

Get a big container to catch flushed coolant out of the engine. Put it under the car.
Disconnect top rad hose from the engine.
Turn the top rad hose upwards on the rad.
Get garden hose pipe ready on standby.
    Start the engine .
Wait for the thermostat to open and the coolant will come out of the engine.
When the coolant starts flowing start filling the radiator with the garden hose.
Keep on doing this until coolant coming from engine is clear.

Not text book but it works.

    Bye for Now!

Dave, does the coolant come out of the top hose, if so how do you stop the collant going all over stuff, do you put de ionised in after?
Nev Ill flush it till its clear but do you think I should stay pink?

Was it definitely OAT longlife stuff in there? I know it was pink, which should mean that it is, but do you have the original bottle, or invoice from when it was changed? When was it last changed? Has it always been pink in your ownership, so perhaps it has previously had a super thorough flush before it was used. If you've had no cooling system issues, then it must be okay. I would be inclined to keep it the same.

The coolant will come out of the thermostat housing where you removed the pipe from and yes it will run down the front of the engine and gearbox.
But that does not matter as it will be clear clean water coming out of there after ten minutes. To the coolant will get washed off the engine and gear box.
What are you talking about Deionised water for. I have never used that in any cooling system. Normal tap water is fine.
Deionised water used to be used to top up lead acid batteries. But I have never used for cooling system.

I don’t know Dave I’ve probably done too much reading. Do you both think it’s enough to do a hosepipe flush it or do you think it needs some sort of chemical flush. I have had a problem with the rad overheating a while ago but I thought I had lost coolant, then I couldn’t find a leak. No problems with the head tho and No problems this year. I’d like to get the blue stuff in there if I could.
    Cheers lads

After 21 liters, all caught in containers and bottles to take to the tip like a good boy, this is the colour change.
Im confident putting the blue/green stuff in now, what do you think?

BTW I used your method @Davezj and it worked a treat, couldnt get to the engine as my LPG loom is there so I used some old innertube etc, anyway worked perfectly cheers!

why do all my phots upload sideways!!!
