Question Mamba turbo upgrade.. any experience??

    Hi everyone,

Been trying to work out what to do lately with the vr4... single big turbo? Bigger twin turbos? Both been spoken about a lot on this site.

But I came across this upgrade package for the standard turbos made by Mamba... just wondered if anyone has had experience or knows anyone whos bought these for their vr4?

I realise they won’t have the same potential as upgrading to bigger single/twins.. but people have managed 350bhp on standard turbos (from what I’ve read).. so upgrading with this kit would surely get you nearer to the 400bhp mark (with relevant mods) without needing to do major re-plumbing of the exhaust manifolds; which sounds like a good compromise to me!

what does everyone else think? I don’t want to spend £255 on these if they’re no good, I’d sooner put that towards custom manifolds!
    Professional bodger!

After stripping and cleaning and fitting the new parts, you will still have to get the rebuilt centre section (CHRA) balanced.
Which will cost probably another £100 per turbo.
If you can find anyone to balance a turbo they have have not built.
Just do you homework and check out all the costs before diving in.
It is very unlikely that every part of the rotating assembly have been individually balanced so they can be put together in any orientation on the main shaft. That is why they are built and balance at the factory.

If the turbo is not balanced and will be rotating at 100,000 to 200,000 rpm it will start to vibrate and destroy itself. In a relatively short time period.

    Bye for Now!

Sure, I had considered the work needed to fit these (balancing etc, In fact I’d probably get the turbos sent off and fully rebuilt by a professional - a local company would do both turbos for £500 + the £255 rebuild kit), but even then I imagine the cost would still be cheaper than making the custom manifolds/new turbo(s)/ down Pipe when going down the bigger single/twin turbo route.

Just wondered what the outcome was for anyone else who may have gone down this route
