This is probably the old grey vacuum canister thingy on the firewall near the brake distributor block. Check the air lines to and from it, the connections, and the cylinder itself for any cracks.

thanks, ive had a play around with the hoes and checked them all and now everything seems ok for the time being. is there replacements of these available easily?
The issue is usually an air leak or a poor electrical connection to the solenoid on the bulkhead. There is a good chance fiddling with it all will solve the problem for a long time.

If you are checking everything, put a multimeter across the solenoid and check is is in the region of 40 ohms. Although if it is substantially different search the site as I may have remembered that wrong!
