Miles to the gallon, what mpg are you getting?

Just wondering what MPG you’re all getting?

My car has had a remap, high lift cams among other mods and I struggle to get more than 20 on a smooth run (as I expected as I find it difficult to be light footed with the exhaust spurring me on ). I’ve been told by the Mrs that I need to get a more sensible car... especially with a possibility of a child on the way! I think this car can be practical as long as I can get the mpg to a more sensible 30mpg perhaps - which I think a remap would help.

So is there anyone one else with similar mods? And if so.. what mpg are you getting on a smooth run!

    Cheers, Alex

30 is going to be tricky. I get about 20 to 25 and I am doing well. 18 is more often where they are!

    Have you considered lpg?

Also, unless you are doing a lot of miles, 20 mpg to 30 mpg is not a huge saving.

with a bone stock facelift auto,on a looong motorway run, keeping way away from the fast pedal and cruising at 68. I can make 30-32. you may be out of luck, LPG is the way to go!

Thanks for the reply guys.. well funny enough I’ve just worked out my average mpg (over the course of a month - fast driving but a lot more easy driving) and my average works out to 9.2mpg. Does this sound right as an average?
So 30 might be out of the question.. but I think there’s something not quite right with my car as the fuel gauge seems to drop almost as quick when I’m being light footed!
I’ve never really looked into lpg, have either of you used/installed LPG? I remember a friend had his car as LPG drop in power but cheap to fill? And around £1500 to have fitted maybe?

Edit: (My driving was mainly covered over A-roads doing 50mph, several roundabouts.. so several stops and accelerations! Thought I’d get nearer to 15mpg!)

I’ll sort out the turbos, give the engine a good service and consider a remap to make sure everything is in check, hopefully then I’ll be hitting late teens for my mpg!

That mpg almosts sounds like track day territory! How are you measuring it? The only reliable way really is to record the distance between fill ups to the brim.

Mine averages about 16-18 normal use, 25ish on long motorway runs.

I only have a V6 Sport but when driving very gingerly (ie mostly to speed limits bar the odd slip road blast) I get 34mpg, when I have a heavy foot it drops to 28-30. Mostly motorway miles. That’s using good quality fuel as well.

If you want an economical car you bought the wrong car.
As others have said 18-20 mpg is about average and 25mpg on a long run.
When calculating mpg for god sake don't look at the fuel gauge.
Fill the car up to the filler neck, reset trip meter to zero.
Go for a drive longer the better to average the usage out.
Fill car back up to filler neck. Make note of the litres of fuel and calculate the mpg from the distance traveled and fuel used.

The other point about LPG is true if you want cheaper fuel bill get it converted to LPG half the cost of petrol. I average 40-50 mpg for the same money I would have spent on petrol.
It will cost about £1200 to get the car converted.
But if you intend to keep the car for any length time it will pay for itself pretty quickly

I have two LPG converted legnums.
And have had them for some time.
Both were converted about 6-8 years ago.

Just do the maths for yourself to see if the LPG conversion route is right for you.

    Bye for Now!

Where did you get your cars converted? I've asked around a few places but either no one gets back to me or doesn't seem interested

I considered converting mine but we keep loosing lpg stations up here and installers are now few and far between. I think Dave converted it himself to gas or with help from Adaxo

Yes I converted my own car with help from Adaxo.
I also helped Adam convert a number of other cars.
Getting a good conversion is hard to find.
Off the shelf conversions are no good for high performance cars, you have to get a kit tailored to your power requirements.

If you are considering it go for a liquid injection system. Much better and will eliminate knock almost completely. So you car run as much boost as you like. Or as much boost as you head studs, con rods, crank, pistons will take before letting go.
Sky is the limit on power.

My both vr4s do anything between 22 on motorway to 15 around town all on lpg @0.60 per litre and yes lpg is the way to go I did convert 13 legnums so far most of them are live happily unless broken due to rust issues.

Cheers for the replies! Interesting to hear what mpg you’re all getting. Car is off the road at the mo doing odd cosmetic jobs. Though I sorted the problem! 45mpg.... from another car

When the car is back on the road, I’ll measure the mpg again properly and see what I’m getting! Though I drove it last week, only a 12 mile journey or so and I definitely saw the fuel need drop

ignore the needle. if its all the way up, its full. if the lights on, its empty. anything else "you have some amount of fuel fuel"
    for my car:
the first 60 miles on the motorway happen without it moving, then about 30 miles per 1/8 down to 1/8 left, then another 100+ miles on the bottom 8th Oo

the light comes on at the same time the car starts to splutter on an incline
