    Nev / Tim, Thanks

I know but people need bargains and I need rid of it hence £500, I think the neighbours will be happy!
I never quite got around to doing what I wanted with it, and then I went and lived in Orkney leaving it on the drive in Devon with all that brings.

It is in far better condition than the SL350 that had a couple of bushes grow up around and became part of the hedge! I got that on the road again but time is against me with the Legnum as a house has now sold

Well Tim (Brother) Picked it up on Thursday
His words were it needs a lot of work to bring it back to a good car
Sills have seen better days, a full set of new brake discs/pads, maybe new shoes.
Coilover Suspension is rusted and may require a new set or removed and cleaned up/replaced
Mould on door cards may or may not clean up
Bonnet requires attention as bubbling Rust along front edge
So at a guess a £1000-1500 may need to be spent to bring it back to it's best.
To all you people who think it's a bargain it is not it's the right price for a vehicle that has stood for 6 years.
But I knew that when I offered the £500 asking price without haggling.
Yes I know I can make a grand or so breaking it but I do not want to break it - it just seems a waste
I may at worse use the engine and drivetrain in my FTO and sell what I can from the rest
2.5TT 4WD FTO anyone - Don't think anyone has done that yet

So Tim's gonna look at it closely over the next few months and see if it's worth saving
If it isn't it may well end up on my drive in Cumbria for a 4wd VR4 conversion on the FTO
I will have to bin the Wife's old Kia Sedona on the Drive thats currently being used as a shed
(She now has a nice 3.2 Shogun)

Great that this one is rescued - super pleased as I have been watching this thread for a while

I bought my VR-4 from a friend nearly two years ago at mates prices and it needed what I guess was a similar amount of work

    IMG_20171230_163705.jpg

In between was a lot of this and I've probably spent what you are budgeting (*and then some more)

    IMG_20180406_163516.jpg

But the end result to me (at least) is worth it so keep posting pictures as you update

    Well update on this

Well me and Tim @ Viamoto have got the Legnum VR4 Auto
£600.00 incl hiring the trailer and cost of the car

It's sat for 6 years (4 in a garage 2 on the drive) and it's a little worse for wear
Not sure what we are going to do with it !

It started but the battery is fooked and only kept the car running for about 10 mins even though fully charged
Tim Had to jump start it off his van to get it going then removed the cables and it ran for 10 mins then conked out
and next to nothing via key except interior lights just about coming on (battery well and truly dead)

So it's a runner. Now not sure what to do.

Do we repair it - (Welding might take a chunk of money as it's sat for that long)
Do we just get it going and flog it to get money back and a little for our trouble ?

Tim got a new battery and stuck it on but before he started car
Loads of smoke from alternator - so new alternator required
(I have several old VR4 units so no problem getting one reconditioned by Nippon who do Mitsubishi UK's Recons)
    More to follow.........................
Tim is not looking forward to changing the alternator - I said it's easy just do the same as V6 FTO one (At a complete guess)
Anyone know if it's just the same to change ?

I can see this project quickly turning into FTO VR4 4WD Auto (My FTO is an Auto)

    Mike

At least it was only 600. I spent much more for something which after closer look was just parts bolted together for quick sale

The alternator will come out of the wheel arch. The amps it produces makes a difference as to how easily, an 80A item comes out relatively easily but a 120A one often requires a little bit of engine jacking to help with clearances.

    I agree with Nick...

The 80Amp is a cinch! Even for a amateur like me. Remove the tensioner pulley for the alternator belt completely and place to one side. Then remove the large Iron bracket that comprises the alternator bracket, completely out and you'll be able to riggle it out through the gap above the sump out of the wheel well as Nick says.

By the way Mike that is the recon Alternator you supplied me back in July! Thanks So much for the quick pinpoint delivery which allowed me to get it in the car and on Holiday to France the next week! Stress!

    Good luck!

    Just an additional note.

Take the wheel arch liner out.

And I would also say that the connector for the control signals for the Alternator may need fettling with a file as the connector from the car doesn't seem to want to fully engage ( be fully inserted ) without shaving off some of the plastic from the shrowd on the alternator. Tolerances!

    Regards

I assume Matt had a 120A when he wrote the article. I also think the condition of the mounts has something to do with how much jacking of the engine you need (or don't need) to do.

the alternator if a full on pain, not as bad as getting the rack out but its bad!! ive done this in Holland on a trip, it does come out but its like a rubix cube with no actual colours on it, I got mine out and when trying to get the new one in it was like starting again, I can tell you that it does go but ive no idea how I did it, either time, I know I have no want or will to do it again, I think next time ill try get it out of the top, I didn't realise this was for sale or id have jumped on it! good luck, be super careful taking the subframe nuts an bolts out mine were rusty, ive had a few issues with the bolts being captive, and hard to replace, text me if need assistance, and check the autobox plug for metal, mine both broke on a planetary and both had the uprated wave spring

Regarding the alternator issue, My alternator would seize up if i didn't use the car for a few months and when I started it, the belt would smoke. It was simple enough to put a spanner on the pulley nut and free it off with a couple of turns. Once freed it worked perfectly for many more years. It might save you the pain of replacing it!
