    Single turbo auto build...

Just thought I would share ah few pics of another single turbo conversion I'm working on, but for the 1st it's automatic transmission. Stock block with lots of external upgrades . Dyno video and results will be posted soon...IMG_20200325_184116.jpgIMG_20200325_180149.jpgIMG_20200325_175948.jpg

Looking interesting - I'm considering a single turbo conversion on mine, but want to retain the auto gearbox. Need to consider low down grunt though, as I'll be doing some towing!

Will be very interested in how you get on!

Finally got some time to make some base pulls on the Dyno with our auto build single turbo project. On 95 octane pump gas + water methanol injection. 379 whp @ 343 ft lbs tq

    Good result the Raj,

what boost pressure are you having to run to get these figures?
Are you using custom exhaust manifolds or are you reusing the originals?

    Bye for Now!

Hey Dave, 24psi of boost with low timing due to pump gas. On E85 or race gas it gonna make more power with even less boost. Also because it's auto and not manual we realized that the car made less power on the same boost as a manual setup. But it's alot of fun to drive and daily, power comes in hard at 4200rpms as u can see from the TQ curve, power all the way to redline.
Custom manifolds, I don't use the stock manifolds anymore after 400whp it back pressure alot causing valve float etc....
Will be heading back on the Dyno soon tho, the owner wants ,400whp.

That is some interesting info Raj.
are you running stock internals, or have you done pistons and rods?
are the heads standard or have they ported.
    are cams standard?
    are valve spring standard?

just trying to get a good gauge what is required to make approx 400whp.
    exhaust manifold bigger
    big turbo. (G25 -660 size)
inlet and exhaust pipework for turbo fitment
enough fuel to support the air going in. (bigger injectors, bigger fuel pump, bigger fuel pressure regulator).
Boost control for the extra pressure (can you get away with ECU and 3 port controlling an external waste gate)
    tuned to support the changes

    is that about right?

I thought it was the increased boost that caused the engine failures on standard internals with the single turbo upgrades. High boost = high torque. Is 24psi safe to use on standard internals?

Doing a single turbo upgrade myself at the moment using a Holset HX35 twin scroll setup and wasn't looking to take it over around 18psi for this reason

Guy from Oz on one of the Facebook groups has been running 413whp for a year now, with stock bottom end and only upgraded head studs. Regularly tracks his car with no problems. He's using a fairly big turbo.. GTX3576 at around 18psi to achieve this. It isn't a torque monster but it's good enough in my opinion...

The guy is also just using custom log style manifolds. Not the equal length tubular setup...

Stock head and block, all we did was install the ARP head studs and 1050x series ID injectors. Stock head, cams, valves etc. We are using the AEM X series boost guage/controller to control boost, but u can use a 3 port solonoid and have the ECU control it just fine....

We run them on 26psi here on pump gas and water methanol 440ish WHP with no issues

some great info in this thread.
it is good to know there are some people pushing these engines past the normal setups.

the issues i have seen on stadard internals is with head lift on the stock turbos this is due to the factory stretch bolt used for the head. swap them out for stronger bolts/studs and the issue goes away, well something else is next in line for failure , not found that yet.
the other issue is killing cracnk and conrod bearings, i believe this is down to low end torque, or more correctly too much low end torque. if you sympathetically tune the engine to bring the torque in gently at the bottom end and ramp it up with the power more to the top end then this will make bearings and stock rods last much longer. when i mean low end torque i mean 300+ Ft/lb at 2500rpm is going to damage bearing but at 4000rpm plus the engine is spinning that much faster the extra torque should not damage the bearings. it is not as much fun but it will make the engine build last longer.

i made both of the mistakes above too much boost and loads of torque low down in the rev range. made all 3 of my engines lift the heads and require new bearings. you live and learn but i did not learn quickly enough, i was having to much fun.

Thanks for sharing that Dave Good to know about the low down torque being the killer.

I'm not expecting to much low down torque with my single setup but I do want to it pull all the way to the limiter. Way I see it is if you're not in the powerband and getting some lag that's what gears are for

It's from the 3000GT, 6G72TT. Just have to double up on the spacers and use longer bolts
