    Wonky speedo and limp mode

My speedo sometimes stops working completely, or the speed starts rising with the revs, and then the gearbox goes into limp mode. I fiddled around a bit with the cable going to the gearbox output sensor, and it worked for a while, but after hitting a bump the poblem comes back.
I'm thinking the problem is in the cable or connector of the output sensor, but are there any other obvious places where the fault might be?

Have you disconnected the cable from the sensor on the top of the gear box.
the last car i looked at with the same issue had completely corroded terminals on the out put shaft sensor and they just turned to green dust when the cable was disconnected.
the issue was a verted bonnet and the water draind collects in the output shaft speed sensor divot in the top of the gearbox.
the moral of this story is don't use a vented bonnet in the rain.

You can get water collecting in the divot for other reasons but that was the issue in the case i saw.

    Bye for Now!

    A couple of questions:

Are you in the UK (with a speedo converter fitted)?
Is your car Auto? If so what are the first couple of numbers of the chassis code? eg EC5W 040xxxx

The car is a -97 Legnum Car Of The Year Edition -Auto. Chassis code EC5W-0013XXX. No seedo converter fitted although i guess the car did spend some time in the UK at some point. (I'm located in Finland.)

I ordered a replacement output shaft sensor, but haven't had time to check it yet.
Yesterday the speedo was going all crazy, but this morning when i drove 4 miles to work, it seemed to work fine. (Only 2 degrees Celcius outside.. Wonder if it makes any difference..)

you need to check the wiring and connections to confirm the issue before you go ordering parts.

Well, it's a gamble, but considering I have quite a tight schedule at the moment, having a 70km round trip to the garage, and the shipping time of the parts, I figured buying the 32£ sensor is worth it, if in the end it will save me time and petrol.
If theres no obvious problem in the wiring/connections, I guess it's going to be trial and error anyway..

So that age car should have a gearbox speedo sensor.
If it was in the UK it would have likely had a converter fitted to the loom near the gearbox, the loom near the ecu or behind the ash tray, or directly behind the dials.
If your new sensor doesn't work then I'd visually check the cables next.
