    Awaiting delivery

    Hi there,

I bought a Legnum VR4 on Saturday. Awaiting delivery on Friday. Everything seems good with the car pretty solid. The only potentially scary bits were a report of metal fillings on a previous gearbox oil change, and some corrosion on an inner sill and wishbones, any advice? The gearbox seemed to work perfect other than getting it out of park. Previous owner was called Alex Green if anyone knows him or the car. Engine sounded a bit tappety but I hear there is a lifter upgrade that can be performed. does anyone know the part number.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello and welcome to ClubVR4!

The main killer on these cars is rust - get those strut tops, sills and rear arches sorted, and keep on top of them, and you'll have many years of very happy motoring!

Tappets can be a little noisy, and can be made better with an oil change with decent oil (we recommend Amsoil around these parts), but it won't cause any damage by leaving them as is.

Parts wise, most new parts can be got from Viamoto! Otherwise, just ask, and someone will know where to get them from!

    Welcome to Club VR-4.

Nice COTY car you have there. There are usually a few people on here who can supply 2nd hand parts where new is not possible.

The dealer network may still have odds and ends of spares stock and regular service items can often be found in your local motor factors.

It also has a random bonnet ornament that I've not seen on another car.

Once any bodywork issues are sorted, is it advisable to upgrade the tappets and gearbox wavespring mods I have read about?

Could somebody also advise on the going rate for these. Ebay values seem to be 5-7k for clean examples. While on the for sale section on here i've seen nothing over 2k.

Prices in Japan have jumped in last year.
There are not that many low mileage good condition ones now.
The cars that have survived are between 19 and 25 years old!.

The wave spring will be expensive as it is a Autobox removal and full strip down to fix!.
Might be a better option to keep an eye out out for a good used Autobox and keep it as a spare.
There are threads in this forum re gearboxes and numbers and years that will tell you what boxes may or may not have an upgraded wave spring.

A lot of places treat this like a full import car and do not list full parts, or accept them to work on.
Keep asking on here as others will have had the same issues to deal with and have the solutions

In my opinion there is no need to change the wavespring. Many boxes have the better one in already but I can't remember how to tell.
Tappets / lash adjusters make an irritating noise but are not detrimental, I'd only change them if the noise is bad.

Collected the car today. the AYC warning light, which didn't come on when I originally test drove it, is now on all the time. Previous owner who I managed to contact (seller was dealer who took it in part ex) said it used to come on occasionally and probably needs AYC oil change. Hopefully its not a major issue.

The Red light can sometimes be intermittent due to the Pump pressure. Some days the pressure may be ok other times not enough pressure.
There is an adjustable pressure switch available (search forum) that can adjust the pressure and stop the dash light although the pump activates at a lower pressure. It is quite common, but it does mean that the pump isn't providing the correct pressure so the light comes on.
Saying that it can be different things that cause the light to come on.
Keep an ear out for grinding noises just incase!.
It does not cause any damage to drive the car with the red light on, but when the light is on the AYC is not active.

Start with AYC oil change in the diff and the reservoir in the boot, that may fix the issue. After that, as Louis says, it may need an adjustable pressure switch. @MPBVr4 may have one available.

Cheers, I really appreciate the help and advice guys. I did have a quick look for the reservoir in the boot while I was doing a show and tell with my mates, but didn't find it. I will have another proper look tomorrow and hopefully do the AYC oil change. The pump oil change looks quite involved.
