Hi, have to join to view a link.

    https://www.clubvr4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12217

I've got a 97 Legnum VR4 that revs high changing between 2nd and 3rd and have read it maybe the rear cover seal?

Also, fuel consumption issues lol. The more I read, the more I see it's a heavy drinker. 17L/100km on the first fill lol

And the AYC rear diff needs the oil replaced because it makes that horrible noise sometimes when accelerating around a tight corner

Anyway, I like the car and just want the transmission sorted for now.

    Regards,
    Eric

First thing is the gearbox fluid. Spec and level. The spec has to be SPIII. The level needs to be checked after the gearbox is warm and has cycled through all the gears.

Small boost leaks can mess up fuel economy as can a lazy lambda sensor but yes, they are thirsty!

Cheers for the reply. Have checked fluid, it has a transmission leak that runs all the way under the car so don't know where it's coming from yet, but have topped it up with SPIII fluid. It was all nice and red so doesn't appear to have any burnt/overheated oils. The red circled wording in the attachment is exactly what my transmission is doing so was going to get this looked at. Will get it checked for what wave spring it has while I'm at it.

Just received an open port 2.0 tactrix OBD2 plug in, but can't connect because I think my car has the version ecu that is too early for it? Was going to check diagnostics with that but think I have to change my plans with that one.

I'd take that info with a pinch of salt. Not saying they are wrong, but the auto 8th gen VR4 has a W5A51 gearbox, not a W4A. I have never seen a VR4 shred it's torque converter splines, whereas I have seen two damage their wave springs. It is possible the n/a FWD V6 uses the W4A gearbox and some of those do shred t/c splines but the issue was designed out on later cars as I understand.

As far as I know the open port 2.0 shoulld connect to all VR4 ECUs, but the earlier ones (yours is very likely to be as a 1997) are both more difficult and more limited when it comes to flashing.
