    Group Buy: ARP Head Bolts

    I'm going to be buying some ARP head bolts to go into my engine.

    See here for what and why!

    https://www.clubvr4.com/forum/showth...-and-headbolts

    They come in boxes of 10, and we need 16 per engine.

    So, buying 5 sets, we get 3 engines (plus 2 spare).
    Buying 8 sets, we get 5 engines.

    I'll try to get a discount, but without discount, it's looking like it'll be about ~£250 per set of 16.

    Here's the catch, they're out of stock, and seem to be everywhere But, I've put my name on the waiting list, and will be contacted when they're available again.

    I've secured 2 others already, can we get 2 more?

    @Confused The ARP bolts are a straight swap aren't they, and can be done one at a time? Future-proofing seems like a good idea to me...

    Indeed! Stay tuned and you might find a handy "how-to" guide appearing soon...

    Well, I'm wondering about doing it at a future garage day (or before!), so might save doing my rocker cover gaskets until then.

    @Confused I suppose I should have added the subtext of put me down for a set. I'm in no rush!

    I suddenly got a message yesterday from the supplier, he had some in stock - so I bought them and they arrived with me today!

    Unfortunately a little more expensive than first thought, they came in at £290 per 16.

    So, priority for purchasing them at this price goes to the following people, in order:

    @Wouter
    Ben from the FTO group
    @elnevio

    I might have had other interest I've forgotten about from the WhatsApp groups I'm in, and I might even get hold of another batch anyway so I've got some more available in the future...

    The stock head bolts are stretch bolts, which, when installed, stretch slightly, and provide a clamping force (a bit like your typical spring washer does to prevent a nut/bolt from coming undone, but at a more "molecular" level.

    When you start increasing cylinder pressure, such as when running more boost, these bolts can stretch further, and leave you with the head lifting slightly.

    The ARP studs are made of a material which has a stronger tensile strength, and aren't designed in the same way, which means that under the same conditions, they shouldn't stretch.

    This means you can potentially run higher cylinder pressures. If you've already had head lift/gasket failure, then this isn't a magic cure, but it can be a preventative measure, or something to do as you replace failed parts & rebuild.

    I've just looked at your profile, as currently I have a set from this group buy sat on my shelf which I haven't yet been given any money for, but I see you're in Canada, which might make postage quite expensive - you _may_ be better money-wise getting a couple of sets of the 3SGTE head studs on your side of the pond than having me send you some - having had a quick look at postage costs, it'll be around £25, which brings the total to £315 - so do the maths and if it's cheaper for me to send you some than you get hold of a couple of sets, then just let me know!

    Canada like to add a lot of import tax to stuff, so it is very likely that will make the biggest difference to where Alex gets his studs.
