Hi all - UK galant vr4 ralliart owner

    Hi all,

Alex here - bought a galant vr4 a few weeks back (been looking for years, finally saw one up for sale so I snapped at the chance!)

I joined here as I've had a nightmare getting a new Cambelt and I know I'll need other bits, first post I've seen was a link to my car and a couple of people saying probably give it a miss - think this is going to be a bumpy ride of ownership haha!

    Hi and welcome, Alex!

If you're handy with a welder, and are prepared to spend some time making it into a nice, strong, solid car, then you've bought a wonderful project!

If you want a car to just get in, drive, and not worry about... maybe not!

That said - we're here to help you wherever we can!

Where abouts in the country are you - there might be someone nearby who can give you some advice and assistance?

    Hi Garry,

Thanks for the reply! I was initially looking for something to just get in and drive but that dream died when I discovered the leaks, took it into the garage and they told me about the rot haha
It's booked in for all the mechanical tomorrow and I've been relegated to a diesel Corsa for a while until it's back.
I'm in greater Manchester, north west - I've found all the contacts the previous owner used for tuning are now ceased phone numbers so not the best situation. Still, glad I bought the car, a learning experience if nothing else

I'm sure they won't mind me tagging them, but you've got @Davezj and @adaxo pretty close to you - both are very knowledgeable about these cars.

We also do regular "Garage Days" and "Dyno Days" (often at mine, in Nottinghamshire) - the last one was September, and we had over 10 VR-4s in attendance!

    Hi and Welcome.

Parts are out there, but not always from your regular parts places.
Viamoto in the UK are great, also amayama and mega zip for dealer parts and sometimes the actual mitsubishi dealer are ok for parts prices
    Ebay is also quite good.
It is worth paying to join as a memeber as there are many instances of parts from other mitsubishi models and years and also hyundai models where the parts are the same and interchangeable.

There are some parts that are now discontinued and no longer available anywhere, except used, engine cover for example, but they usually pop up for sale on here
Updating Soon!! 1998 Legnum VR4, fully serviced every 4500 miles. Fully Amsoil'd. Falken 453's, EVO 8 FQ320 rear diff.

    Thanks to both of you!
I should clarify when I mean parts, I'm considering tuning the engine a lot - thanks for those tips, they're being bookmarked... I've been using eBay a lot to look for stuff. The idea is - the car has already had an Evo 4 brake swap, hopefully they're good for now but they're only 4 pots - I've seen 8 pot conversions with floating brake discs going for around £1700 then a bit of fitting - if the Evo discs don't work out then they're on the list
In terms of the engine, I'm thinking 400 maybe 450bhp is on the cards, I'm guessing from the forum that that'll need a switch to td03 of td04 turbos, a bigger intercooler and a few other bits.... fuelling side of things, I'm hoping to take it nice and powerful without the expense of a new gearbox or a forge

If the suspension goes....then it's probably a coilover switch out

Only other thing on the menu is potentially powder coating the wheels white but that can wait

Ultimately I don't actually race any car, I want a nice sound while I go 0-77 on the motorway and 30-50 overtaking, that kind of thing - it seems like it would be a waste of money not to tune after I've sorted all the rot underneath! I was hoping I could drive it into a specialist, say "there you go dude, this is my budget, can you make it fast?" But it doesn't seem that simple now haha

Definitely up for some meet ups and stuff once it's all fixed up!
And will be getting round to joining paid at some point this week!

Fyi - only haven't done paid because I need to borrow a PayPal, mine was hacked but luckily only had out of date credit cards on it!

Unfortunately these cars aren't particularly common - so there aren't any tuning shops that you can just walk into! And off-the-shelf turbo conversions don't exist.

That said, there is a wonderful set of people here who can help.

These cars already have TD-03 turbos (albeit the smaller of the range), and fitting a pair of TD-04s is a lot of work. A single turbo conversion, such as a Holset HX-35, would be a better bet - but you're still looking at a lot of custom fabrication work.

I realised the uphill struggle when someone posted about making the lights brighter by fitting a separate wire directly from the battery with thicker cables lol - thank God for this forum and the 2 dozen owners still out there!

Viamoto is a great online shop for parts. I'd echo all the advice above really.

Without upgrading the turbos you can make the car substantially faster. If you want headline power numbers then custom pipework for turbo swap is the only way. The tubs are small, so restrictive at high revs where the power numbers are made. Having said that they can blow harder lower down the rev range, so the torque figure and area under the curve can be seriously improved. Using a G-meter for accceleration, stock VR4's are arounnd 6.0s 0-60. With intercooler, exhaust, raised boost and a tune you can get that to just under 5.0s. However headline power might only be 320bhp, approx 40 gain on your car from stock. Your torque will have gone from 270lbft to 360lbft though and your usable rev range will be large.

Can not believe I haven't found viamoto on my own after all the time I spent looking for the Cambelt!
    Thank you!

Small world! It says you're a sponsor - are you running a tuning business by any chance?
