    Arrow Pulley noise

    Hi all,

Another day another problem! I've got a lot of noise coming from a pulley
    - if you're looking from the front of the car at the engine, it's to the left of the main engine and underneath
I don't know anything about the layout of the engine so I'm sorry for the poor description. I had the cambelt but not the water pp changed when I bought the car (1200 miles ago?) But I have zero trust in the garage that did the work...they told me that the water pump was on a different belt.

This sound has just started today, all I did was start the car up and warm it up for a couple of minutes then moved it to the other side of the driveway! Then I left it running another couple of minutes for the oil to settle and all.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks,
    Alex

Water pump is run from the cambelt.

See attached for details of the other belts and pulleys. Right side of picture is front of car when the engine is viewed from the (drivers) side of the engine bay.

Thank you - I'm going to take it in to a garage asap and get it checked out, if it's an engine out jobby then it may end up being next summer and a lot more done at the same time, fingers crossed

First thing I'd do is get a long screwdriver, put the handle to your ear, and hold the sharp end all over the engine and try to pinpoint where the noise is the loudest, then report back to us.

I did this with my Anglia, and it seemed noisiest from the very centre of the V where the two heads join. Turns out for me it was that I'd crushed the idler pulley with the chain of the engine crane.

Doing the belts is not an engine out job - but the mechanic was 99% of the way to doing a water pump by doing the timing belt, so it was stupid to not do it - and why you should always check the forums here for guides and advice from the people who know the cars - aka us lot.

It's relatively easy to check the items that run off each belt by removing the belts one at a time. My money will be on one of the tensioners with a dry bearing.

I will update you! I knew it was a belt, my big bet is on whether the original garage actually replaced the cambelt...

I had a chat with one of the lads at this garage earlier today, I think I'm going to take Bubby in next week and see how much of my list they're prepared to tick off and how much I'm looking at....

I am always wary of garages - whilst there's nothing too "special" about these cars, they are very rare, and most garages don't really know what they're doing with them, so you potentially end up paying much more labour costs than strictly necessary because they have to spend time figuring everything out.

I don't think you're particularly far from @Davezj who might be able to assist you in diagnosing this, and give you some pointers before you head to a garage and potentially part with lots of money.

Sounds like the power steering pulley bearings as they can get surprisingly noisy.
Fortunately one of the easier pulleys to adjust . Easier if you don't have protective covers under the engine.
Access larger smooth metal pulley underneath the car to the left, loosen bolt (don't remove bolt) holding pulley and slack off adjuster bolt to take the strain off the bearings and see if the noise becomes quieter.

    Hi all,
So the noise seems to be coming from the middle wheel where both belts meet....I tried a screwdriver to the ear but i didn't get any more because of all the pipes etc in the way
