    tyre ratings / brand???

anyone have any views on this -

thinking of getting "V-rated" instead of ZR, as V rated tyres go to 149mph - i have no intentions of ever trying to reach 149 and certainly never 120+

    thoughts????

also any opinions on these brands - federal (i think Ian rates them),
Barum (continental??) , velocity xtreme (yokohama?)
    BMW E60 525i (3.0) M-Sport.

Even H rated are upto 130mph, and what happens if you do 131mph the tyre blows up. I dont think so. They must be tested to ?? % above what they are rated at, need someone with more inside info than me to get the exact figure.

How often do you go above 130? I suppose the rating is pretty important in Germany but not so much in GB.

Bound to get flamed for this

I would be wary of this because its not just top speed, but also exceleration and cornering speed.

Which I presume you do attempt.

If not why have a VR4?

I'm inclined to agree with paul here - as i have no intention of ever doing 1 X X again - was a bag of nerves for ages waiting for plod to arrive at the door

however have seen ZR ones for a resonable price...... but the v rated are so much more cheaper.....

Thats so true - wanna buy it? (i do need to slow down - but the VR4 tends to encourage the hooligan within )

    BE WARNED!!

Fitting the incorrect tyres to your car may invalidate your insurance. The specification may have to match the manufactuers recommended fitment.

Spot on Colin.. It's OK saying you are never to likely achieve those speeds.. But in an accident how ever fast and an insurance claim( and at worst a fatality or injury). If you don't have the right spec tyres your gonna get the book thrown at you ..

You'll also find that the load rating of a V rated tyre is less than the equivalent Z rated tyre and the VR-4 is a heavy old beast. The tyres are the only part of the car that are in contact with the road (assuming you're the right way up! ) so your safety is largely dependent on them - I'd never skimp on tyres ...

Load rating on my 235/45ZR17 Vredestein Sportracs is 94W. Don't think you'll have a problem with 91W.
