    VR4 blew up again....

    http://www.clubvr4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11703

Same thing as last time, a bit of a miss, then white smoke started coming out. Luckily it was about 2 minutes down the road so I just drove home and borrowed my mums car to get to work.

Any idea's on what it could be? Last time mitsi changed all fuel filters and oil and stuff, and they said the ecu went into fail safe mode and just started pouring heaps and heaps of petrol in (the white smoke)

I'm a little bit lost, I think I'll undo the maf mod this weekend and reset the ecu and see if it is ok to drive it into mitsubishi on monday

it was a 6a13tt, now it might be a 5a13t or something

It is running 100% fine though if I floor it, the excess fuel must be being burnt up then, it only smokes at idle or under partial load.

Rhys, I'll have a look tonight. I hope that with a reset of the ECU it will be driveable at least.

when excess fuel burns there is black smoke from the exsaust, you only get white smoke when there is moisture in the system ie water, i think it will be a good idea to get the compression checked up. it could also be your headgasket is week
NO More VR4 for me, well ive still got the 6G

hmm ok, mitsi said it was petrol vapour that wasn't burnt last time. I'm used to seeing black smoke from cars that are running a bit rich, but this is like pouring out

today I undid the maf mod, screwing the thing in as much as possible, so the car should run quite rich. I reset the ecu as well.

It drives fine, I left it idling for about 10 minutes before I took it for a quick drive, it still smokes a bit from time to time, and runs a little rough, but it should be fine to drive, I'll get someone to follow me into work on tuesday, and drop it off at mitsi just around the corner.

Not the big black plastic air pipe into the plenum by any chance ?

The joint between the pipe and the plenum has a rubber flange and this deteriorates over time.

Happened to mine, I had loads of smoke and poor running.

the one just before the throttle body? That did appear to be fine. It is at mitsubishi now anyway, it was fine to drive for about 50km . An ECU reset seems to fix it.

I told them if it is something with the ECU then they don't need to fix it, I'm going to get a proper aftermarket one.
