17 or 18" rims or stick with 16's ??

Hi,

My tyres are getting a bit low now and could do with new ones.

I been enquiring about 205/50 x 16 Pirelli's for my 16" rims. At about £100 each, is it worth forking out a few hundred pound more and getting some nice 17" or 18" rims and tyres ?

The new Japanese Performance magazine has a potn catalogue inside with loads of rims and tyres INSERT INTO post VALUES (cheapest being £499 for 4 17" rims and tyres)

I would take care with the cheaper wheels/tyres mate - on a car like this it ain't worth the risk. If you don't want/need new alloys then fit decent tyres like Goodyear Eagle F1's, Yokohama AVS-Sports etc etc. If you go down the line of new alloys then look for a half decent make like TSW - can get a set with F1's on for around £800 in 17"

Go on treat yourself to new alloy wheels!!! you won't regret it and they will dramatically change the look of the car for the better.
I honestly believe 17 inch alloys is the best size for the VR-4 as it gives compromise between usability and looks.

Go for decent tyres if you drive as though you need decent tyres, if you have the cash go for decent tyres as you can drive the car how it can be driven.

I just bought a set of Evo 6 17 X 7.5" off ebay for £320.00
They are in absolutely perfect condition.
The deals are out there if you look for them!!

I have been quite lucky..
I paid £175.00 for the disks that are brand new
they are normally £230.00 each and the 4 pot brembos
cost me £200.00 with a set of spare endless pads
just need bells and brackets now and will be in big brake heaven!! if anyone knows where I should go please let me know!!

I agree with the rest of them, if you gonna buy tyres, get some high performance ones, can make alot of difference. And about the mags, of course it looks good and improves performance, but it also attracts theives!

Assuming you're fitting Evo V-VII brakes, you don't need bells or brackets. The discs and 4-pots fit OK, the only mod needed being to remove the disc backplates.

Had mine on now for four months or so with no probs

355mm! Wow! I feel very inadequate now No, I just have the 320mm discs which were standard fitment on an Evo VII FQ300. What make are the 355mm discs? And what calipers will you use?

Is there any real disadvantages in buying cheap INSERT INTO post VALUES (ish) rims ?

The last thing you want is for them to flex in anyway.
It could be possible that very cheap wheels could buckle, dent more easily.
Remember our cars are very heavy and powerful, I'd expect it wouldn't be too hard to damage cheap wheels under heavy high speed cornering after a period of time.

But I can't see the problem if you start at around £600 for 4 as most popular brands and models are around that price and people wouldn't buy them if they were crap.

They are AP racing disks, will be using endless pads
and brembo 4 pots...but need to find some bells and brackets!! any ideas???

i am just guessing, but knowing that evo 5,6 & 7 standard disk fit - souldnt there be bells and adapters for the AP big disk conversion availiable. assuming that this is a ap conversion for a evo that is

Also if you see any alloys you like, post a square picture of your car and someone will graft those wheels on to your car using Photoshop.

I have decided to stick with the 16" wheels for now and have new Pirelli 6000's. It's not that I don't want new alloys, but MOT is due, Insurance is due, and tax is due :Cry1: :Cry1: and the 12 month warranty is almost up.

Mitsy do a full cover against any kind of mechanical failure INSERT INTO post VALUES (I can't remember what it's called) but it's a few hunded pound or so a year. So I will need to cough up for that aswell.

INSERT INTO post VALUES (stands up, looks out of the window at the shining, just polished VR4 and thinks: 'who cares, it's only money' )

That will be a Red Zebra warranty then, they are very good!!! the only downside is the car has to be serviced by them every six months or 4,500k miles whichever comes first. :INSERT INTO post VALUES ( forget any performance upgrades too unless you get them to fit them for you, most upgrades they won't allow.
