Wastgates, Duel port or Single port?

    I don't have a VR4 yet but I am gathering info before I buy.

What type of wastegates are fitted (single or duel port) to VR4. see pic.

As I understand it you need a duel port wastegate to fit a sping/ball manual boost controller correctly. See link info below.

Please correct me if I am wrong as I am kind of new to this, and I like to get the definitive answer before I start anything.

I can see how a settable pressure valve can activate the wastegate, but is that the same as a ball/spring boost controller

    Sorry, missed this one.

Yes, they're single port, and both actuators are controlled from a single vaccuum source. You can easily fit a manual ball/spring controller, by interrupting the vaccuum line before it splits off to each actuator.

Funkstar wrote a very straightforward article on how to do it here:

cheers for the answer. i tought it would be, a single port on most car it seems to be the norm. However the link i added seem to suggest a duel port fittment for a bal/spring boost controllor.

I can see how the single port application works but it is not a fail safe design.

i don't know how reliable ball/spring boost controllors are but from initial thoughts it looks like it will have the following draw back.

if the ball/spring controllor jams shut the wastgates will not get any boost pressure resulting in massive over boost to the engine. If it jams open on the other hand the wastegate will see normal boost pressure as if no boost controllor was present.

I am not saying the Duel port would be better just different. I think it would have the opposite charactoristics, jam shut, operate as if no boost controllor fitted, jam open, equal boost pressure is fed to both side of the wastegate diaphram and wastegate remains shut, engine gets max over boost.

may be that type of boost controllor is not a good idea at all. It all depends on how reliable they are. Do you know of any in use failures. It would be interesting to know.

    cheers

    Dave
