VIN numbers and age of car ?

I have just seen a Legnum for sale in Japan on the Internet described as a 1997 car with a lower VIN number than mine.

Does anyone know if the VIN number is date sequence ?

i.e. would a car built in May 1997 have a higher VIN number than a car built in April 1997 ?

If this is the case I wonder how my car got SVA'ed ?

It was a private import and the previous owner had it brought into Liverpool so I would guess it was tested at the SVA centre there.

Even if the vin numbers go in manufactured sequence (which I assume they do), the date you mention would presumably be the registered date.

Just before I left VW we sold a Polo GT that had been in stock for 2 years before being sold and registered !
