Today I took my car into the main dealer to have them look at what I thought was a minor coolant system leak. I was having to top up the radiator every 2-3 weeks.
So they did a pressure test and found no leaks. Then they did a teekay test which apparently tests for the presence of hydrocarbons in the coolant system.
Anyway this test indicates that the car probably has a blown head gasket.
They said they'll have to take the head off to fix it and repairs will probably start at $2500 and could go up to $4000 even, they reckoned.
Can a teekay test give a wrong result? I have never seen any white stuff on the oil dipstick, white smoke out the tailpipe, misfires, a loss of power or anything. I told them this, but they say it must be in the early stages of the leak and fixing it is still going to cost a load of dough. I had a compression test done when I bought the car in Nov 05 too, and that was Ok
They also recommend a replacement waterpump, cambelt and such while the head is off.
Sadly the car has only done 75,000km and is otherwise in a perfect state - not a single ding at the moment. What do you guys reckon? I can pick up a new legnum off trademe for ~$7000-$8000 probably. Should I keep the car and get the repair done or dispose of it?
