    Thumbs up Project VR-2...

...May soon be able to get off the ground again!:thumb:

Just tried a quote with Elephant.co.uk... With a list of modifications that would give the GLS the nice bits that I like about the 2.0 Sport / VR-4...

...And they didn't try to stitch me up!!:boing4: In fact, it was the cheapest quote I've had so far!!!! Yipee!

GLS Power may just be about to change!!!evil5:

    I can see it now...

    Optional Extra 17inch Sport rims
Kit from the optional extras brochure INSERT INTO post VALUES (Skirts, airdam bibs & spoiler)
    Hi-contrast dash from 2.0 Sport
MMCS INSERT INTO post VALUES (it's the law!!) somehow plumbed in - I want my takeaway ordering service
Dark interior from Sport / VR-4 model...
Cool foldy in mirror things INSERT INTO post VALUES (learnt that EOP UK cars were fitted with these, yay!)
    Remus backbox

    Mmmmm....
    Tasty!

And don't start with the 'Why do that when you could get a VR-4' line...

OK, cash spent on mods would go a fair way, BUT, if I do choose to pursue this way forward, then I get the following savings...

2.0 GLS fuel economy INSERT INTO post VALUES (which has recovered since Redex treatment to 30mpg mixed so far...34ish if I'm on the open road)
2.0 GLS insurance costs INSERT INTO post VALUES (at 24 this is important!)
2.0 GLS servicing & warranty costs
Ten times less grief from Alex INSERT INTO post VALUES (just because she's agreed to a VR-4 doesn't mean she's happy about it)

    Sorry Kieran

    Here's my estimate ..... :lolz:

    17" Alloys and tyres $1,500
    Body Kit $3,000
    Dash $500
    MMCS $2,000
    Dark Interior $2,000

    $9,000 + $12,000 INSERT INTO post VALUES (GLS price) = $21,000

Hmmm .... No 280hp, No 4WD, No AYC, No TC, No Fun

$15,000 INSERT INTO post VALUES (STD VR-4) = $6,000 less.

This $6,000 can be used to pay the insurance and other costs.
We work to live, and to live is to drive a VR-4, around corners at speed. But it costs see here

I presume these prices are in NZD? Nevermind, here's both INSERT INTO post VALUES (of what I know so far):

    17" Alloys and tyres £680 = NZ$ 1,808

Body Kit... Haven't priced - but the kit is fitted to some UK cars as standard - and non VR4s appear somewhat more often in salvage yards...

Dash £380 = NZ$1,010 - but again, some UK 4cyl models had them as standard, so salvage is a possibility...

MMCS - Peterernest is bringing his MMCS screen to the next meet we're both at, and I've seen posts from one or two other peeps on here saying they're fed up with it, so I should be able to get the screen + back end bits fairly cheaply INSERT INTO post VALUES (anyone who wants rid of their MMCS system, let me know - please!)

Dark Interior - Again, UK spec cars eventually got dark interiors... Salvage again.

The GLS, bearing in mind it's mileage currently books at £4,000 - NZ$10,643

So far, the mods add up to £1,060 - NZ$2,820

OK, as mine are incomplete, let's take your final figure of $6000, which works out at £2,254. Considering I'm facing quotes ranging from £600~800 for the GLS, I think a VR-4 would be circa £1200 for me.

This leaves £1000 for fuel + maintenance. with the miles I do, I'd be surprised if that lasted more than 4ish months.

I think the key thing here is that you're forgetting ongoing costs. I did a spreadsheet that plots whole life running costs INSERT INTO post VALUES (not including depreciation) over 1, 3 and 5 years. Add the average figures for a VR-4 into it and the result is way above GLS territory. I'm not convinced that I would not be in a 'diminishing returns' type scenario with a VR-4...

Re: No 280hp, No 4WD, No AYC, No TC... My loss - but I've never had it to loose.

No Fun - :headsc::mad:Knickers!:nono: I firmly believe that you can have fun whatever the car - different cars bring different fun!

    Oh well

I suppose, if you are going to rationalise a dream, its not worth having. A GLS + VR4 kit is OK, if it is not your dream. I don't believe a VR-4 is a really rational car. There are always, cheaper, faster, more economical, etc. available. A dream has no real price. Put a price on it, and it loses it's appeal. INSERT INTO post VALUES (re. spreadsheet)

My VR-4 and many others, it is their dream car.

    KiwiTT...That's a very insightful aspect.

My dream at the moment is to get my own drive to polish mine and Alex's GLSes on. Once we're there, then maybe.
I think getting extra financial pressure at the moment would jepordise that dream...

Argh! I'm wandering into 'up all night pondering mode'.... Not good!:nono::rolleyes:

I have the perfect way to counter this; whenever she starts whinging about my obsession with all things Mitsubishi [usually starting "WHAT is so amazing about them ? It's just a car !"] I threaten to go buy a Micra.

You should see her panic !!

I'm with Kieran on this one tho; Considering how much my 2.0 GTi costs to run [even allowing that my other half lives in Notts] VR4 ownership is currently a scary prospect !!
