you talked about launching a manual VR4.. but i cant find the post..

but, its basically keep revs at 3500RPM then drop the clutch? for the perfect launch? just drop it, foot strait off?

im gonna go to a drag strip on the 13th £30 for the day, and as many launches as you want... just want to check before i make a fool of myself

    cheers

Turn off your traction control too, that will ensure you get the most from the car.

Im agreeing with Pete here dropping the clutch hard will cause damage

You need to get the car moving before to hit it hard
There has been lots of topics on the MLR regarding this
Some guy spent £1200 on a new clutch took it to Santa Pod
5 trips down the track and burnt the clutch out

    Just a warning

    Smile Be Carefull.

I went to Santa pod two years ago in my old 21 Turbo pushing 270 ish horsepower third run down the strip bang,
Piston liners cracked and head gasket disintergrated.

One call to Mr AA please tow my car home please and one gutted me!

Just a word of warning, p.s The 21 only reason for this was because I got gready with the boost and Mr bleedvalve kept turning up not me honest.

    Well have fun anyway mate.

    See ya soon.

According to an old tried and trusted bit of car test simulation software, the optimum launch method for a manual VR-4 is dumping the clutch at 4100rpm  for a 5.70sec 0-60 ; standing quarter mile estimate is 14.0sec @ 99.6mph.

For comparison, rolling INSERT INTO post VALUES (5mph) start figures INSERT INTO post VALUES (so, from <1000 rpm) are 7.9sec 0-60 and 16.0sec @ 99.0mph for the 1/4 mile. Top speed in both cases is reckoned to be 149.3mph achieved in 101.51sec.

For the auto, it suggests taking your foot off the brake at 5700rpm   , rewarded with a 5.4sec 0-60 and a 14.2sec @ 95.8mph 1/4 mile. Don't know if the box would stand up to that treatment, though ....

    Drag Strip Launch

At the drag strip & when I autocross in my manual VR4 this is how I launch. Hold rpms' at 3500-4500 and slip the clutch out while giving more gas, then x to board ! If I release the clutch too quickly and the revs are too high, it slips and I have to back off the power or it will slip right through first gear. If the rpms are too low and I dump the clutch, the car bogs. But when you get it right, she takes off like a bat out of hell. It is a delicate balancing act to get a great launch. Only about half the time I get it right ! Right amount of accelerator with the correct timing of the release of the clutch. Not too fast, not too slow. BTW, dumping the clutch is not recommended on our cars because we have so much traction and we don't want to shock the drive train too much. I think that's why Mitsu gave us such a weak clutch, so we can't damage the gearbox output shaft and transfer case and the entire drive train.
In my 7G VR4 with the 3 litre V6 TwinTurbo and an ACT Clutch & Pressure Plate INSERT INTO post VALUES (rated for 458 lb.ft of torque); I just hold the revs at about 4000 and slip the clutch and it really grabs and shoots off. Much easier to launch ! The clutch is much harder on my foot too, wouldn't want to be caught in a big traffic jam with this car!
Practice BraindG, that's what traffic lights are for...just kidding. I wouldn't worry about breaking anything with the stock clutch. You might want to let the clutch cool a bit in between runs, especially if you are smelling it.
    Have fun,
    Ed

Dropping the Clutch at 3500rpm on my friends car gave it a perfect launch. The cars wheels don't spin it just grips. If you go lower the car bogs down, too high and the clutch starts to stink...sniff...sniff Dropping the clutch just means you lift the clutch pedal and at the sametime mash the go pedal to the floor, one up one down.

Friends car is stock besides the exhaust after the cat. Not sure how yours will go with the extra boost etc. May require more/less revs to get the best. You'll soon find out.

Any type of drag racing will put strain on your car. It's up to you how you treat it.
