Auto Gear Box's - Easy Question

    Hi Everyone,

I'm a new member here and I have my eyes set on a Galant VR4 97+ (Excuse my newbie'ness!)

    Question is...
How reliable are the automatic's??? All I ever here are ones that break and it's scaring me away! Is it common for them just to break?

    NOTE: I don't want a manual, I prefer tiptronic/auto.

Can anyone please tell me weather it's worth me getting an auto or just staying away from them?

    Cheers everyone!

As long as they are properly serviced and maintained then they will last as long as a manual box.

If serviced properly, it'll last the lifetime of the car. I personally believe most failures are incorrect oil (because correct oil is expensive!) or possibly an incorrect level.

One way in which it may have the incorrect level is a dodgy seal on the torque converter. If you have a leak there and are an enthusiastic DIYer then it won't cost much to rectify - the seal is cheap. However the labour is expensive, so it could cost more if you pay someone else.

Fundamentally, check the oil is in good condition and the gearbox is smooth when you buy the car. Service it with expensive oil. check it occasionally and enjoy many years of reliable motoring!

Getting slow in your old age Nick?

Great! Thanks for the input everyone!

I feel a lot better now knowing that... Only thing I have to worry about now is the amount of petrol i'll be using! Lol.

As they said, the auto's are good if they are serviced correctly. Do you have a weblink to the car?

    Other regularly service and flush.
We work to live, and to live is to drive a VR-4, around corners at speed. But it costs see here
