Cool Workshp/Ramp/Many hands needed. Beer provided.

    The dark side beckons....

My Skyline's gearbox is old and tired - synchros gone (nothing to do with ham-fisted bernmc gear changes in the early days of ownership of course!), so I need to replace it. Picking up a 2nd hand box this weekend, so I'm going to need to install it at some point.

I don't fancy working in a muddy field at current sub-zero temps, so I wondered if anyone has a decent size workshop with or without ramps that I could use for a weekend (Hopefully only a few hours / a day!

And would anyone like to toddle along, have a group hug/CVR4 get-together and work on a proper car ?

I'll provide beer, sausages and a pound of dolly mixture.

Happy to pay rent for the garage +/- ramp too...

As it's silly season, I'll probably aim for early Jan sometime...

Depending when, i'd be happy to stand and chat, handing tools over whilst eating all of the food for a day.

Will you keep an eye on the sheep as well?

    Taverymuch all of you.

Now, my twisted, hairy lads, How about Jan 5th or 6th - 1st weekend of the new year? Depends firstly on yokel boy being available obviously...? If not PSButtyboy, give us a date.

No reason why we couldn't do some work on other cars at the same time if PSB has space...

Is linconshireshireshire in the UK ?

weekend of the 5th/6th looks ok for me, makes a change i'm not on standby, as for space, theres plenty here, and as an added bonus for sheepy boy bern, theres a field of sheep over the road.
i belive lincoln****e is in the uk, although the local language does appear to be polish.

K if you wanna bring the coupe over then we can soon squeeze it in, oh dear i will have to take the multi gym down, what a shame

I thought these Nissan things were supposed to be reliable ...

You never get gearbox problems on a VR-4 ...

    Roit lads.

I've just spoken to my local skyline chappies (MGT Nuneaton) (isn't it nice when you phone up a garage and they remember who you are ):

    4 hours labour - £230inc - to swap a box.

I've had a fair read of the skyline forums:
    • Not a complicated job, but a bit of a barsteward.
    • The gearbox is F-ing heavy. Tranny jack or 3 people . Numerous threads saying 'do not underestimate the weight of the box'! PSB, do I remember you muttering about a ramp, or is it axle stands...? Rampless, it sounds like it may be a swine of a job as it'll be difficult getting enough clearance under the car for trolly/jack + box. The redhead would have been a nice soft cusion for it to fall on, but he's not coming now...
    • You need about 3ft of socket extensions to get to the top bell-housing bolts.
    • Around four hours work if all goes well.

So what do you girls think? Still up for it? There's every chance that I'll get the new box in, install uprated bits in the old box, and do it all again when the syncros go in the replacement (it's a common skyline g/box fault, although the exchange box I'm getting has tougher synchros). Would therefor be nice to be able to have a bash...

If the consensus is it's not worth the effort, I'll pay the cash for it to be done locally.

I bet its not as heavy as a vr4 auto.

Ive got 2 flexy extensions about a foot each and a few normal extensions so should not be a prob.
