and in case you are interested in the Barrett rifle...

*sigh* it's narrated by that ex USN Seal plonker... they really do like talking up their own stuff - even though there are several other rifles that fire heavier calibre bullets.

But the Barret is a beter gun than the T-rex, one in ten persons will not hold on to it when the trigger is pulled.

Forget the Barrett.... Carlos Hathcock generally used the standard sniper rifle: The Winchester Model 70 .30-06 caliber rifle with the standard Unertl scope. On some occasions, however, he used a different weapon: the .50-caliber M2 Browning Machine Gun, on which he mounted the Unertl scope, using a bracket of his own design. This weapon was accurate to 2500 yards in single-fire mode.

That's right - he held the record for the longest range confirmed kill before those Canadian soldiers (can't remember their names) took the record in Afghanistan. Their unit is Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry.

Rob Furlong, a former corporal of the Canadian Forces, holds the record for the longest confirmed sniper kill in combat. Established in 2002, it exceeds Carlos Hathcock's 1967 record of 2,286 m (7,500 ft) by 144 m (472 ft). He was attached along with fellow PPCLI to the 101st airborne at the time and the shot was taken using a McMillan bros. tac-50.

Absolutely awesome work. Not to take anything away from them but I do think the job is made a little easier with modern technology such as laser range finders etc and modern firearms/sights but you still need to be a well trained and disciplined rifleman to utilise what is available.

Kudos to them though - that is truly an amazing feat of arms.

I've always liked the SVD - partly because of it's looks but mostly because it's the first semi automatic sniper rifle that actually works as intended.
