Agreed! It would be a hard thing to police though.

I think a point a lot of people have missed is that its not the car that causes trouble but the driver. You can still speed, drive recklessly and put a stupidly loud exhaust on a heap of **** car.

That is very true. Thinking back to when I was 19, I had a 1100cc Fiat - And that was enough! If i'd had a Galant at that age i'd have probably bent it several times over!!

It's a very tricky subject. As I get older I get increasingly intolerant of Neds/Chavs/whatever you call them in their kitted up little hatchbacks and I do sometimes think that a noise, power or engine size restriction would be a good idea. However, as I've said, ten years ago I was doing the same, fitting spot lamps and spoilers to my ancient Mk3 Escort - and I'd hardly describe myself as a menace to society!

In fact, this is where the whole CCTV thing falls on it's arse... A camera can pick up a hot hatch doing, say - 35 in a 30 limit, but what it can't tell is if that's a genuinely innocent mistake, or if the only reason the said hatch was caught at 35 was because the driver had managed to slam the anchors on from 80, cutting up several other motorists, nearly killing someone in the process!

Of course, the problem with coppers everywhere is that their emotions/prejudices come into play too - as already mentioned, a young lad driving a Civic SiR vs an older guy in a Commodore.... Who's gonna get pulled if they're spotted having a quick traffic light race?

i have been in my mates car and been pulled over and some of the crap the the cops try to pull is just stupid... they see a modified car and just have to pull us over. the dork was going over the bloody thing for 45mins trying to find something! everything was certed and it was legit as. but the cop still decided to make the law up as he went along! apparantly his car wasnt alowed to have the rear seat out and a 1/2 cage....even tho the cert plate had it all on there that the car was now a 2 seater and had the cage that was motorsport nz aproved.

the whole time he was wanking around us at least 10 people ran the red light at the interesection we were next to.....

whats more important i have to ask...
exact same thing happend to me in my mates Nissan Laurel in Wellington, we got pulled over by the Wellington Library past the police station in town, as soon as the blow off valve went off we got pulled over, the whole car was certified, warranted, registered, legit but he tried to get us for being too loud, too low, excessive accelleration around the corner, it was all a load of sh** in the end he got off it when he went down to the police station and confronted them about what happend. I dont think it's just "boy racers" that have a problem i think the cops play a big part in it too sometimes, sure we can close off roads and have a dedicated place to do drifts and burnouts and what not but in the end....when you race on the streets there's the whole exitement over getting caught, and seeing if you can pass the lights and the car beside you before the go green, and then seeing if you get lucky or get caught by the cop in the corner. Street racings been around for years, and there's always been public outcrys over it but personally....i dont think it's going to go away. I've heard some pretty damn loud XR6 Turbo's and AU XR8's at work as well. i work at Capital City Ford in Wellington so we see quiet a few loud as Falcons come through....the thing i dont get is...if i were next to an old guy in a loud as XR8 with headers and a big bore in my stock standard as VR4 with the big "VR4 twin turbo" sticker down the side....i rekon i'd get pulled up over him only because i'm a young guy in a twin turbo car (i'm almost 20)

I don't think the problem will ever go away. What we should be doing is what our ozzy friends do and that is only allow people to drive cars that are low in power e.g a 16 year old can only drive a non turbo, 1600cc, 1800cc or anything below those.

But in saying that my first car was a toyota levin supercharger, but I needed my car for work and drove normal (99%) of the time) In the end I never got into trouble or lost control of it. Also I never SHOWED OFF to my mates by doing burnouts or racing others at crazy speeds, I just knew what cars I could bet and what I couldn't by doing 50kph not 160kph

And it's not just based of age thou, you need to have at least 100hrs of driving under your belt to move up. So if you really wanted to drive you have to earn it.

The One thing that I have gone on about tho is taking peoples cars off them for really bad things e.g drink-dirving, if you get caught double the limit the BYEBYE car or if you are "street drifting" for all those drivers that think they can and f**k it up and hurting others. Speeding, doing twice the limit is not good so again BYEBYE car for ever not this 30 day s**t.

It is good to see that the cops have finally noiced that people don't pay their fines so have changed the law so the fines are less but the likely hood of you losing your licence is higher, for longer too.

That was starting to make me angry was people STILL driving around but their fines are tapping out at $5,000 to $20,000, and I get hounded over fines for $170, all because they know that they will get the money out of me.

People like that need to lose their licence for good, if you can't be an adult about controlling something that can kill others then you don't deserve one.

i also hate the CCTV being caught on camera. but ANPR is good. it detects, whether your car has tax, mot, who its registered to, whether they have a license or not, whether its insured.

I don't think we necessarily have to emulate the UK if we can at all help it.

as for the random spot checks, they are very irritating, i had it all the time in my old vw`s, and only met one decent copper. i had one copper go over my car for an hour or so, and only come out with, you have a sidelight out, which wasnt, the bulb had fallen out of the light. sorted it out there and then, tried to give me a producer. you know you have got a sidelight bulb out aswell... i had one decent copper who spent an hour or so, talking about my car, and how cool he thought it was, and when he noticed i had no front no plate, as it fell of , just put it somewhere visible.
if the police are going to do random spot checks, they should be tough, but fair.

rayray i agree with your thinking, but you missed the most important one out.

Because your comments about racing show that you are exactly the kind of person that the police and government should be targeting I.e boy racer scum.

i was talking IN GENERAL, it's what this kid was saying on motorway patrol one night when he was doing 120km/h down the motorway but you prove my theory right, you automatically thought i was a boy racer...if only i could sell my VR4, it's been on trademe once and it'll probably go on again soon, i'd turbo charge my nissan maxima, at least the guys at maxima.org dont judge me.

no offence, but when you post a comment saying
"when you race on the streets there's the whole exitement over getting caught, and seeing if you can pass the lights and the car beside you before the go green, and then seeing if you get lucky or get caught by the cop in the corner"

that comes across, as that you personally race on the street, because you enjoy it. people will frown upon you, for doing so, if you had said
"I WATCHED A PROGRAM WHERE SOME KID SAID ...when you race on the streets there's the whole exitement over getting caught, and seeing if you can pass the lights and the car beside you before the go green, and then seeing if you get lucky or get caught by the cop in the corner"
(capitals used to show changes )
people will read it slightly different. and then assume that you dont race on the streets.

it wasnt about prooving a theory right, you posted a comment, which will get a rise out of some people, you didnt say that it was someone else saying that in your first post. if you make a bold statement like that, people will take it for what it is, and not read between the lines.

if anyone is going to do any racing, it should be on the track only

Almost everyone in NZ does this: using fogs as driving lights. I used to think people doing this were tossers, but more recently have taken to doing it too. Legnum lights seem so dim in comparison to many other cars, so I figure we need all the light we can get!

the VR-4 facelift fog lights aren't powerful enough to be annoying to anyone anyway, even nocturnal animals!
