I take it then that it is a known flaw with these cars...?!

Will give the dealers a call in a sec.

Yep, both my rear arches are starting to go. They will be sorted post-wedding i.e. later this year / early next year as part of my "bodywork overhaul" .

I've booked my car in to get my rear arches done by the bodyshop at SMC Mitsubishi at Heathrow.

An AMAZING quote! £398 including VAT for both sides, paint, prep, labour - the lot! Ok, i have a 20% reduction because they dragged their heels for 3 months to get me a quote - but i think it's more out of desperation for any business in this financial climate.

I chatted with the estimator today and it all stacks up on what they'll do to illiminate the rust, through to the end finish.

Although my arches are really minor (slight 'hard' blistering on the inner lips of the arch) - I want to get them done now before it spreads in months / years ahead.

    According to the quote sheet:

    LABOUR INFORMATION:

    Rear bumper and rear lamps
De-rust and treat both rear wheelarches
Flat prime and respray to colour of M.R.S

    PARTS INFORMATION:

Flat prime and respray to colour of M.R.S

    PAINT & MATERIALS INFORMATION:

Flat prime and respray to colour of M.R.S

Spoke to the assesser and he told me where and how the spray would be lost, and that the rust would be sanded back, sprayed with a rust primer and then primed on top.

All make sense or am I being duped? Other quotes I had last summer ranged from around £700 - £1,000.

That is a good quote but not a great quote.

I was quoted £400 to have the rear arches (including re spraying the entire quarter panels) and boot lid on mine.

But mind you that is a good price for a main dealer job.

Dropped my V6 off at SMC Heathrow earlier for the wheel arch work. Ran through the details again with the bodyshop guy, all sounds great - stripping back the rear arch lips, and also putting think sealant on the inner rear arch so the water doesn't 'sit' there.

Should have her back early next week.

I have the same problem (lots of rust on rear wheel arches) but for 400 GBP I would have done it already! Prices for this kind of work seems (are) WAY higher over here...

Luckily mine are confined to just the inner lips of the arch and are minor at the moment - but I saw a 1997 model at EuroSpec recently with the bubbling and it had taken over the actual panel - so that's why I'm dashing now and not waiting!

You are right - that is cheap. They are respraying both back wings and over the doors, the same part of the panel, to blend it in.

Had my car back from SMC Mitsubishi's own bodyshop on Friday night following it's wheel arch work and I'm so glad it was booked into Don (Ancient Of Mu) on the Saturday morning for a polish top up.

The finish was great, blended in nicely to the naked eye - however under Don's halogen lights, well... either the shade of X08 Pyrenees Black was wrong or they used a cloudy lacquer as it looked grey, and although shiny as a shiney thing, it looked cloudy or milky in the bounce-off the lights. even in normal daylight if you looked hard enough, I can now see the difference on the other panels.

I was back at the bodyshop yesterday morning and they are now going to speak to the sprayer when he's back tomorrow to see what he did, how high up he sprayed of the wheel arches, etc, and then they'll speak to the paint supplier. I left it with them that they can do what they want, as long as the shade and sheen match. Their initial reaction was nothing! Didn't agree to it being that way, or disagree with me. They said they'd re-polish the newly lacqured areas to being the colour / sheen up (!)

Thanks Don, for your tip off ! Appreciate it!

You are more than welcome .

I'm just sorry that SMC seem to be yet another bodyshop that cannot get it right first time.

Honestly you are being nice about it.

The job they did was awful. It is TOTALLY the wrong colour. They Machine polished it and washed it leaving huge numbers of scratches in the laquer. AND to top it off they burnt through the paint on the edge of the rear drivers door.

Now I know that I spend many an hour looking very closely at paintwork but If it was my pride and joy I would want a better job done regardless of how much I paid.

Update on this... SMC rang me today. The sprayer confirms he just painted the area around the arch, the rest of the rear quarter-panels were lacqured. Now the tecnical expert from ICI is comint to inspect my paint finish. The good news, or rather the right news is (so this won't turn into a battle) is SMC agree with me (and Don!) that the painwork is the wrong colour and once all the inspections are sorted, they'll get the panels back to the colours they should be.

Result! Thanks again Don! The only reason I'm being far to nice about it with them is because they are playing ball... If they drop that ball - then I'll get firm with them!

Spent a few hours down at the SMC bodyshop today and all sorted - following a few tests by the ICI guy who came to inspect the paint job on my car, the sprayer was lying when they said they just painted the local parts of the panel and blended the rest in with lacqure.

The ICI guy tested the lacqure, it had cured fine, they re-machine polished an area to try and bring the colour out, made no difference (as I knew it wouldn't). Finally he got his day-light lamp out and saw that the whole panels had been painted. He then set about with some photographic handheld scanner that 'read' the paint on the affected area, and then two usual panels and that also confirmed the shade was wrong!

Anyway, he's told Mitsubishi bodyshop what paint they should have used and I'm now waiting to book the car back in again to get the panels re-sprayed in the proper colour!

Don, have some reputaion from moi! Thank you!

    You are more than welcome.

Are they going to fix the bit of the door they burned off?

did you watch them polish it?

    What did they use?

Glad they are sorting it and thanks for the Rep

You could always tell them you will get you're own paint specialist to check thier work before accepting the car

On a serious note if you need me to come down and inspect it I'm more than happy to.

    Top man, thank you!

They just polished the re-painted panel just to bring out the colour - I watched them do it, and yes, I told them about the bit they burnt off, and they have a chip / dent specialist working full time there on staff, so he'll do that.

Will keep you posted on it all.

Bit of a thread revival here, my rear arches are bad and will need cutting out and replacing. Question being can someone point me at where repair panels can be had or is it just a trip to the main stealer with a wallet as thick as a suitcase? The work itself shouldn't be an issue as I know a bodywork guy who can do the work easily just need panels and paint to give him.

Recommend a stealer in the home counties area? Cheers for any info you guys can give me, hopefully be able to get the arches done soon.

    Chris

Cheers dude, I'd assume there are no issues on importing into the UK? Can't wait to get her mint and shiny. I'll post up a couple of light cleaning pics from last weekend soon, got a pretty good shine.
