Future Insurance for nz and the cars...

just been reading the thread for htem pommies where one of them go their car impounded for not having it insured...

Does anyone else think it will get that way eventually in NZ?

if so could be a bloody great way to keep pos's off out roads etc.
also when you think about it. not insured means it gets impounded, and no reg or wof means no insurance in theory. so it would be impounded.

please discuss as you see fit

day dreaming of 13b's , huge ports and suicide doors, and a few other things too I cant say here.

Yes yes yes! The whole compulsory insurance idea is great. I just hope that whoever the clown that crashes into my nice VR4 has insurance, or I'll be asking the Police at the scene to turn their heads for a few minutes while I do some freelance cranial recalibration with Mr Steelcap Workboot.

If everyone had at least 3rd party then insurance in general would be cheaper.
As it is - people that are insured are paying via their premiums the cost of haveing to recover monies from uninsured incidents
    I vote compolsery 3rd party.
This wouldnt remove some of the idiots from our roads though - there are many insurers, and some of whcih will accept the higher risk by just placing a higher premium or excess.

this needs to happen, it is almost socially acceptable to drive with no insurance in NZ, I would never have dreamed about doing that in Aussie, neither would any of my friends.

as sad as it may sound. insurance companies might just charge hi risk offenders more. as if they REALLY wish to drive they will pay.
which I dare say causes resentment and sooner or later they customer might pull a shifty.

I'm against compulsory insurance as I don't like being compelled to do anything by the government. It's just another extension of the nanny state.

I just see no point to it. It'll not keep the morons off the road and might even cause everyone's premiums to go up - AMI Insurance said as much in their submission on the govt's proposal. And what's next, will your car get impounded if your cover has accidentally lapsed, like what happens in the UK?

Yes hopefully it will mean the car being impounded if the insurance has accidently lapsed, one rule for all. You can always get your insurance sorted and retrieve it.

You loose your licence if you are caught accidently doing 40km/h over the limit so this is not a big stretch to impound a car that doesn't have the right to be on the road.

I agree that I don't want a nanny state in NZ but insurance is part of owning a car as is registration and WOF, both of those are manditory

Nup, the Insurance companies are agin it cos it means they'll have to accept a certain percentage of the idiots as a risk so it might cost them more. No one wants to insure the high risk drivers. If they are not insured then it falls on the poor 'other driver' who has to pursue the idiot in the courts to find out he has no money anyway.
    Watch out, I've got a VR4 and a 4G61T and I'm not afraid to use them !

I dont see why they should HAVE to take a percentage of bad risks.
I am sure in england they have specialist insurance companies for such people.
Could be wrong and it might b for a class of car or modded cars.

And of course, lonely planet said that drink driving in NZ is 'practically a National sport'.

    Bring on compulsary 3rd party.
