    white smoke and misfire

Hi guys, im new to this forum. Just a small introduction then. I owned a 99 Galant 2.5 VR4 that i recently passed on to my little brother. It had a mines computer box with GRedy exhaust and upsized piping, boosting at 1 bar. Well, he screwed it over within a week, saying he shifted into neutral at high speed with the throttle flat. I guessed a turbo is gone but it could be an engine! Its smokin white smoke now with an engine misfire but no mechanical noises otherwise. Any idea on how to check whats wrong?

Have you reset the ECU yet?

How easy is it for you to get parts?

If fairly easy to get, a complete engine is usually easier, quicker and cheaper in the long run to get a replacement engine complete with turbos and drop it in.

Assuming you have a mechanical failure and an ECU reset wont fix it

White smoke can mean a head gasket failure, since the coolant gets in and turns to white smoke, but it could be anything.

If the turbo had died, it would likely be much more blue-ish smoke, and you'd find oil in the pipework.

As Kenneths says though, a replacement engine is probably a better bet than trying to rebuild, unless you can confirm it is a head gasket and you do the work yourself..

Ingletor, yep he is, posted a welcome elsewhere which mentioned it.

Pretoria Monster, whilst not helpful to you this is the one thing I think is a bad design of these cars (and others that have the same system). I don't think you should be able to nudge the shifter into N from D without pressing the button. This is especially true when the tip box shifts up a gear when you push the shifter forward.

But there is a Rev limiter to protect it from damage...to blow the HG you need serious temperatures or serious pressure, neither of which high revs will give you particularly.

I suspect he was actually on a full-bore maximum speed run on fuel that doesn't damp down the temps enough.. I've seen a few Mines ECU'd cars do head gaskets now (one of mine included!) when they leave japan and have the limiters removed or taken on high speed runs.
